さゆり: こんにちは！「Sukima English」へようこそ。ホストのさゆりです。

さゆり: 今日のテーマは、美容院や理容室で使える英語です。

サラ: Hi, I'm Sarah. A haircut is one of those things where you really only get one try. （日本語訳: どうも、サラです。散髪って、本当にやり直しがきかないものの一つだよね。）

Marc: Hi, I'm Marc. And if you do not explain it well, you are stuck with the result for a month. （日本語訳: どうも、マークです。それに、ちゃんと説明しないと、その結果が1ヶ月続いちゃうんだ。）

サラ: That is the scary part. You have to say it before the scissors start moving. （日本語訳: そこが怖いところだよね。ハサミが動き出す前に言わないと。）

Marc: So today we build the words first. Length, amount, color, and the final check in the mirror. （日本語訳: というわけで、今日はまず言葉を組み立てていきましょう。長さ、量、色、そして最後の鏡でのチェックです。）

さゆり: 髪型の希望を伝えるのは、実は日本語でも難しいですよね。長さも、量も、色も、ぜんぶ言葉にしないと伝わりません。

さゆり: 今日は4つの場面で、12個のフレーズを練習します。マーク、サラ、よろしくお願いします。

さゆり: まず最初の場面です。お店に電話をして予約を取り、当日、受付で名乗るところまでを練習します。

サラ: Phrase one. "I'd like to book a haircut." — Asking to make an appointment for a cut. "I'd like to book a haircut for Saturday." （日本語訳: フレーズ１。「散髪の予約をしたいのですが。」— カットの予約を取ることだね。「土曜日の散髪を予約したいのですが。」）

さゆり: 「I'd like to book a haircut」で「カットを予約したいのですが」。電話でも店頭でも、最初の一言としてそのまま使えます。

Marc: You will also hear "I'd like to make an appointment." Both are completely normal. And once you are talking to the salon, you can shorten "haircut" to just "a cut." （日本語訳: 「予約をしたいのですが」とも言うよ。どっちも全く普通だよ。そして、サロンと話しているときは、「散髪」を単に「カット」に短縮できるんだ。）

サラ: Phrase two. "Do you have any openings this afternoon?" — Asking whether there is a free slot in the schedule. "Do you have any openings this weekend?" （日本語訳: フレーズ２。「今日の午後は空いていますか？」— スケジュールに空きがあるか尋ねることだね。「今週末は空いていますか？」）

さゆり: 「Do you have any openings this afternoon?」で「今日の午後、空いている時間はありますか？」。"opening" は、予定表に空いている枠のことです。

Marc: This is the word the staff use themselves. If they are full, they will say "we are booked up today." Then you just ask "How about tomorrow?" （日本語訳: これはスタッフが自分で使う言葉だよ。もし満席なら、「今日は予約でいっぱいです」と言うよ。そしたら、「明日はどうですか？」と聞けばいい。）

サラ: Phrase three. "I'm here for my two o'clock appointment." — Telling the front desk that you have arrived. "I'm here for my two o'clock appointment with Emma." （日本語訳: フレーズ３。「２時の予約で来ました。」— フロントで、到着したことを伝えることだね。「エマさんとの２時の予約で来ました。」）

さゆり: 「I'm here for my two o'clock appointment」で「2時に予約している者です」。時間さえ言えば、名前を探してくれます。

Marc: Say the time before your name. The staff are looking at a schedule, so the time finds you faster than anything else. （日本語訳: 名前に自分の名前を言うんだ。スタッフはスケジュールを見ているから、時間は他の何よりも早く見つけてくれるよ。）

さゆり: では練習です。サラがお客役、マークが受付スタッフ役です。

サラ: Hello. I'd like to book a haircut, please. （日本語訳: こんにちは。散髪の予約をお願いしたいのですが。）

Marc: Of course. Were you thinking of today, or later in the week? （日本語訳: もちろんです。今日をご希望ですか、それとも週の後半をご希望ですか？）

サラ: Today if possible. Do you have any openings this afternoon? （日本語訳: できれば今日で。今日の午後は空いていますか？）

Marc: Let me check for you. We have two o'clock, or four thirty. （日本語訳: 確認しますね。２時、または４時半がございますが。）

サラ: Two o'clock would be perfect. （日本語訳: ２時でお願いします。）

Marc: Great. Could I have your name and a phone number? （日本語訳: かしこまりました。お名前と電話番号をいただけますか？）

サラ: It is Sarah. Let me give you my number. （日本語訳: サラです。番号はこちらです。）

Marc: Thank you. We will see you at two. （日本語訳: ありがとうございます。２時にお待ちしております。）

さゆり: 予約が取れました。ここから当日、お店に着いた場面に飛びます。

サラ: Hi. I'm here for my two o'clock appointment. （日本語訳: こんにちは。２時の予約で来ました。）

Marc: Welcome. Please have a seat, and your stylist will be right with you. （日本語訳: いらっしゃいませ。どうぞおかけになってお待ちください。スタイリストがすぐにご案内します。）

さゆり: 電話での予約から、当日の受付まで。3つのフレーズだけで、ここまで進めましたね。

さゆり: 2つ目の場面です。席に案内されて、どのくらい切るかを伝えます。今日のいちばん大事なところです。

サラ: Phrase four. "Just a trim, please." — Asking to neaten your current style without changing it. "Just a trim, please. I like the shape." （日本語訳: フレーズ４。「Just a trim, please.」今のスタイルを整えるだけで、変えたくない時。Just a trim, please. I like the shape.）

さゆり: 「Just a trim, please」で「毛先を整えるだけでお願いします」。"trim" は辞書でも「前のカットを整え直すこと」と定義されている単語です。

Marc: If you are not sure what to ask for, "trim" is the word. It means keep the style, just clean it up. If you actually want a change, do not say "trim." Say "I would like to try something different." （日本語訳: Marc: よく分からない時は、「トリム」という言葉を使えばいいんだ。スタイルはそのままに、ちょっと整えるって意味だよ。もし本当に変えたいなら、「トリム」とは言わないで。「I would like to try something different.」って言うんだ。）

サラ: Phrase five. "Could you take about two centimeters off?" — Giving the exact amount of length to remove. "Could you take about two centimeters off the ends?" （日本語訳: フレーズ５。「Could you take about two centimeters off?」どれくらい短くしたいかを具体的に伝える時。「Could you take about two centimeters off the ends?」）

さゆり: 「Could you take about two centimeters off?」で「2センチくらい切ってもらえますか？」。数字を入れ替えれば、どんな長さにも使えます。

Marc: One warning here. In the United States we say inches, not centimeters. "Take an inch off" is about two and a half centimeters. Use whichever unit the salon uses. （日本語訳: Marc: ここで一つ注意。アメリカではセンチじゃなくてインチで言うんだ。「Take an inch off」はだいたい2.5センチくらい。「インチ」か「センチ」か、サロンで使われている単位に合わせてね。）

サラ: Phrase six. "Nothing too short, please." — Setting a limit without giving a number. "Nothing too short, please. I want to be able to tie it back." （日本語訳: フレーズ６。「Nothing too short, please.」数字は出さずに、短すぎるのは避けたい時。「Nothing too short, please. I want to be able to tie it back.」）

さゆり: 「Nothing too short, please」で「短くしすぎないでください」。数字ではなく、上限だけを伝える言い方です。

Marc: This might be the most useful sentence in the whole chair. And remember, they can always cut more later. They can not put it back. （日本語訳: Marc: これが一番使えるセリフかもしれないね。それに、後でいくらでも短くできるってことを覚えておいて。元には戻せないんだから。）

さゆり: では練習です。サラがお客役、マークがスタイリスト役です。

Marc: So, what are we doing today? （日本語訳: Marc: で、今日はどうしますか？）

Marc: Understood. How much would you like me to take off? （日本語訳: Understood. How much would you like me to take off?）

サラ: Could you take about two centimeters off? （日本語訳: Could you take about two centimeters off?）

Marc: Two centimeters. That will clean up the ends nicely. （日本語訳: Two centimeters. That will clean up the ends nicely.）

サラ: And nothing too short, please. I still want to be able to tie it back. （日本語訳: And nothing too short, please. I still want to be able to tie it back.）

Marc: No problem at all. I will keep the length below your shoulders. （日本語訳: No problem at all. I will keep the length below your shoulders.）

サラ: Perfect. Thank you. （日本語訳: Perfect. Thank you.）

さゆり: 「整えるだけ」「2センチ」「短くしすぎない」。だんだん細かく、3段階で伝えられていましたね。

さゆり: 3つ目の場面です。写真を見せながら、髪の量や色を相談します。

サラ: Phrase seven. "Can you do something like this?" — Showing a photo and asking whether it is possible. "Can you do something like this, but a little shorter?" （日本語訳: フレーズ７。「Can you do something like this?」写真を見せて、こういう風にできるか聞く時。「Can you do something like this, but a little shorter?」）

さゆり: 「Can you do something like this?」で「こんな感じにできますか？」。写真を見せながら使う、いちばん確実な伝え方です。

Marc: Always bring a photo. And add one more sentence after it, like "but shorter" or "but not that light." The photo shows the direction, and your words show the limit. （日本語訳: Marc: 写真は必ず持っていこう。そして、その後に「もっと短く」とか「こんなに明るくしないで」みたいに一言付け加えるんだ。写真は方向性を示し、言葉は限界を示す。）

サラ: Phrase eight. "Could you thin it out a bit?" — Asking to reduce the amount of hair, not the length. "My hair gets so heavy in summer. Could you thin it out a bit?" （日本語訳: フレーズ８。「Could you thin it out a bit?」長さを変えずに、髪の量を減らしたい時。「My hair gets so heavy in summer. Could you thin it out a bit?」）

さゆり: 「Could you thin it out a bit?」で「少しすいてもらえますか？」。"thin out" は直訳すると「薄くする」ですが、髪に使うと「量を減らす」という意味になります。

さゆり: 日本語で言うなら、まさに「すく」ですね。辞書にも「はさみなどで髪の量を少なくする」と書かれている、あの「すく」です。

Marc: Notice that this has nothing to do with length. You are talking about the amount of hair. That is why a cut and a thin out are two separate requests. （日本語訳: Marc: これが長さとは全く関係ないことに注目して。髪の量について話してるんだ。だから、カットとすきは別々のリクエストになる。）

サラ: Phrase nine. "I'd like to go a little darker." — Asking for a color change in one direction. "I'd like to go a little darker, maybe one shade." （日本語訳: フレーズ９。「I'd like to go a little darker.」色を変えたい時、どちらかの方向に。「I'd like to go a little darker, maybe one shade.」）

さゆり: 「I'd like to go a little darker」で「もう少し暗い色にしたいです」。"go" は「なになに、になる」という意味で、色の方向を言うときによく使います。

Marc: The opposite is "go lighter." And "one shade darker" is how you ask for a small change. With color, a photo helps even more than it does with the cut. （日本語訳: Marc: その反対は「go lighter」だよ。「one shade darker」は、少しだけ変えたい時に使う言い方。髪の色に関しては、カット以上に写真が役立つんだ。）

さゆり: I brought a photo. Can you do something like this? （日本語訳: 写真を持ってきたんだけど、こんな感じにできますか？）

Marc: That is a nice shape. Your hair is a little thicker than hers, so it will fall differently. （日本語訳: いい形だね。君の髪は彼女より少し太いから、もっと違う感じに落ちると思うよ。）

さゆり: I see. My hair gets very heavy in summer. Could you thin it out a bit? （日本語訳: そっか。夏は髪が重くなっちゃうんだよね。少し軽くしてもらえますか？）

Marc: Absolutely. I will reduce the amount near the ends, and leave the length as it is. （日本語訳: もちろん。毛先の方を軽くして、長さはそのままでいこう。）

さゆり: Thank you. One more thing. I'd like to go a little darker. （日本語訳: ありがとう。もう一つお願いがあります。もう少し暗くしたいんだけど。）

Marc: How much darker? One shade, or something more noticeable? （日本語訳: どのくらい暗くしたい？ 1トーンくらい？ それとももっとはっきりわかるくらい？）

さゆり: Just one shade. Nothing dramatic. （日本語訳: 1トーンだけ。劇的な変化はいらないかな。）

Marc: Got it. One shade darker, and we will keep it natural. （日本語訳: わかった。1トーン暗くして、自然な感じを保とう。）

さゆり: 写真、量、色。3つとも自分から相談できましたね。「なになに、してください」ではなく「なになに、できますか？」と聞くのがコツです。

さゆり: 最後、4つ目の場面です。切り終わったあと、鏡で仕上がりを確認して、次回の予約まで済ませます。

サラ: Phrase ten. "Could you take a little more off the ___?" — Asking for a small adjustment in one specific area. "Could you take a little more off the back?" （日本語訳: 10個目のフレーズ。「Could you take a little more off the ___?」— 特定の場所を少しだけ調整してもらいたい時。「Could you take a little more off the back?」）

さゆり: 「Could you take a little more off the 」で「なになに、をもう少し切ってもらえますか？」。場所の言葉を入れ替えて使います。

さゆり: 入るのは the back 「後ろ」、the sides 「サイド」、the top 「トップ」、the front 「前のほう」。この4つを覚えておけば足ります。

Marc: This is the moment when they hold up the mirror behind you. That is your chance, so use it. Naming the area is the whole skill here. （日本語訳: 鏡を後ろから当てて見せてくれる時だね。それがチャンスだから、ちゃんと使わないと。場所を特定するのがこのスキルの全てだよ。）

サラ: Phrase eleven. "Could you blow-dry it straight?" — Asking for a specific finish. "Could you blow-dry it straight, please?" （日本語訳: 11個目のフレーズ。「Could you blow-dry it straight?」— 特定の仕上げをお願いする時。「Could you blow-dry it straight, please?」）

さゆり: 「Could you blow-dry it straight?」で「ストレートに乾かしてもらえますか？」。"blow-dry" は「ドライヤーで乾かして形をつける」ことです。

Marc: You can swap the last word. "Blow-dry it straight," or "blow-dry it with some volume," or just "could you dry it and leave it as it is." （日本語訳: 最後の言葉は変えられるよ。「Blow-dry it straight」とか、「blow-dry it with some volume」とか、あるいは「could you dry it and leave it as it is」でもいい。）

サラ: Phrase twelve. "Could I book my next appointment now?" — Booking your next visit before you leave. "Could I book my next appointment now, same time in six weeks?" （日本語訳: 12個目のフレーズ。「Could I book my next appointment now?」— 帰る前に次回の予約をする時。「Could I book my next appointment now, same time in six weeks?」）

さゆり: 「Could I book my next appointment now?」で「次回の予約を今してもいいですか？」。最初に出てきた "book" が、ここでもう一度出てきましたね。

Marc: Book before you walk out. It is the easiest way to keep the same stylist, and the good ones fill up fast. （日本語訳: 帰る前に予約するのが一番だよ。同じスタイリストをキープする一番簡単な方法だし、良い人はすぐ埋まっちゃうからね。）

さゆり: では練習です。サラがお客役、マークがスタイリスト役です。

Marc: All right, let me show you the back. （日本語訳: よし、後ろを見せるね。）

サラ: It looks great. Could you take a little more off the back? （日本語訳: すごくいいね。後ろ、もう少し切ってもらえる？）

Marc: Sure. Just a bit more, right around here? （日本語訳: もちろん。もう少しだけ、この辺りを？）

サラ: Yes, exactly there. Thank you. （日本語訳: そう、そこ。ありがとう。）

Marc: How is that? （日本語訳: どうかな？）

サラ: That is perfect. Could you blow-dry it straight? （日本語訳: 完璧。ドライヤーでストレートにしてもらえますか？）

Marc: Of course. Give me five minutes. （日本語訳: もちろん。5分でいい？）

サラ: Thank you. And could I book my next appointment now? （日本語訳: ありがとう。あと、次回の予約も今取れる？）

Marc: Please do. Same time in six weeks? （日本語訳: どうぞ。じゃあ、6週間後の同じ時間でいい？）

サラ: That works for me. Thank you so much. （日本語訳: それで大丈夫。ありがとう。）

さゆり: 直しをお願いして、仕上げを指定して、次回まで押さえる。最後まで自分の希望で進められましたね。

Marc: We have three o'clock with one of our stylists. （日本語訳: スタイリストの一人で3時なら空いてるよ。）

サラ: Three o'clock is fine. Thank you. （日本語訳: 3時で大丈夫。ありがとう。）

Marc: Hi there. Are you being helped? （日本語訳: こんにちは。どなたかご用は？）

サラ: Hi. I'm here for my three o'clock appointment. （日本語訳: こんにちは。3時の予約で来ました。）

Marc: Welcome back. Come on through. So, what are we doing today? （日本語訳: おかえりなさい。どうぞ。それで、今日はどうする？）

サラ: Just a trim, please. But the ends have gotten really uneven. （日本語訳: ちょっと整えるだけ。でも毛先がすごくバラバラになっちゃって。）

Marc: I see what you mean. How much should I take off? （日本語訳: なるほどね。どのくらい切る？）

サラ: Could you take about two centimeters off? And nothing too short, please. （日本語訳: 2センチくらい切ってくれる？ あまり短くしないでね。）

Marc: Understood. I will leave you plenty of length. （日本語訳: 了解。長さは十分残すよ。）

サラ: I also brought a photo. Can you do something like this? （日本語訳: あと、写真も持ってきたんだけど。これみたいにできる？）

Marc: That is doable. You have more hair than she does, so it will look a little fuller. （日本語訳: できるよ。君の方が彼女より髪が多いから、もう少しボリュームが出る感じになると思うけど。）

Marc: All right, here is the back. （日本語訳: よし、後ろはこんな感じだよ。）

さゆり: Wonderful. All twelve phrases — from the first phone call to the next appointment. （日本語訳: 素晴らしい。最初の電話から次の予約まで、12フレーズ全部ですね。）

さゆり: 今日の12のフレーズをまとめます。

さゆり: 予約と受付では "I'd like to book a haircut." 「カットを予約したいのですが」と "Do you have any openings this afternoon?" 「今日の午後、空いている時間はありますか？」。

さゆり: 受付では "I'm here for my two o'clock appointment." 「2時に予約している者です」。時間を先に言うのがコツでしたね。

さゆり: 長さを伝えるときは "Just a trim, please." 「毛先を整えるだけでお願いします」と "Could you take about two centimeters off?" 「2センチくらい切ってもらえますか？」。

さゆり: そして上限を決める "Nothing too short, please." 「短くしすぎないでください」。これがいちばん効きます。

さゆり: 相談するときは "Can you do something like this?" 「こんな感じにできますか？」と "Could you thin it out a bit?" 「少しすいてもらえますか？」。 （日本語訳: 相談するときは「こんな感じにできますか？」とか「少しすいてもらえますか？」って言うんだね。）

さゆり: 色は "I'd like to go a little darker." 「もう少し暗い色にしたいです」。反対は go lighter でしたね。

さゆり: 仕上げでは "Could you take a little more off the ." 「なになに、をもう少し切ってもらえますか？」と "Could you blow-dry it straight?" 「ストレートに乾かしてもらえますか？」。

さゆり: 最後に "Could I book my next appointment now?" 「次回の予約を今してもいいですか？」。帰る前に押さえておきましょう。

サラ: These phrases work in any salon, anywhere. You are just describing length, amount, and color. （日本語訳: これらのフレーズは、どこでも、どんなサロンでも使えるよ。長さ、量、髪色を説明してるだけだから。）

Marc: Right. And the last one matters more than people think. Book the next one before you walk out the door. （日本語訳: そうだね。で、最後のやつは、みんなが思ってるより大事だからな。店を出る前に、次回の予約を取るんだ。）

さゆり: 髪型の希望は、遠慮していると伝わりません。今日の言い方で、はっきり、でも丁寧に伝えてみてください。
