Marc: There was a brown envelope on my desk this morning. Company logo, my name on the front. And I knew what was inside before I opened it.

I got mine last week. Mine already had a date on it.

Marc: Same. Tuesday, eight forty in the morning. I did not choose that. Nobody asked which day worked for me.

And you are going anyway.

Marc: I am going. This will be my fifth one.

Five. So at this point you are the experienced one.

Marc: I am something. I am not sure experienced is the right word for it.

For anybody listening who has never had one, what is actually in the envelope?

Marc: It is the company health check. Once a year, the place you work sends you off to have your whole body measured.

Measured is exactly the right word for how it feels.

Marc: And to be clear, it is not a doctor I picked or a clinic I found. The paper tells me where to be and when.

I tried to explain this to my mother once. She said, so your boss is sending you to the doctor. Then she asked me why.

Marc: That is the right question. And I could not answer it for about three years.

In New York, nobody sends you anywhere. Ever. You are on your own.

Marc: Nobody. If you want your blood looked at, you make the call, you find the time, and you pay for the privilege.

So what changed for you?

Marc: What got me, in the end, is that somebody is keeping tabs on me. Somebody in that building watches a number with my name on it.

That is either really kind or really strange.

Marc: Yes. And that is the whole conversation today. I have had five years to pick one and I still cannot do it.

Marc: Let me start with where I came from, because the contrast is the whole thing. Between finishing university and moving here, I had no physicals at all.

サラ: Not a single one?

Marc: Not one. Five years. I was in my twenties, I felt fine, and there was always something else to do on a Tuesday morning.

サラ: Did you have insurance?

Marc: I did, through work. But there was an amount I had to pay before the insurance did anything, and it was big enough to keep me from getting curious.

You can be insured and still not go. That is the part people here find hard to picture.

Marc: Right. And the logic I was running was beautiful and completely broken. Nothing was wrong with me, so I did not go. And I did not go, so nothing was ever wrong with me.

And that held for five years.

Marc: Which is the frightening part, because it works right up until the day it does not.

Mine is worse. My last exam before I came here was for a college sports form. Somebody listened to my heart for eight seconds and signed a paper.

Marc: Eight whole seconds.

Maybe six. And my last office in New York gave us a gym discount and a meditation app. The message was, take care of yourself.

Marc: Which sounds supportive until you notice it also means, this is your problem. At home your health is your own project. Here it is on somebody else's schedule.

So what happened your first year?

Marc: A coworker handed me the paper, I looked at it, and I asked her whether it was optional.

サラ: Out loud?

Marc: Out loud. And she made a face I had never seen before. Not annoyed. More like I had asked whether Wednesday was optional.

Marc: She said, everybody goes. That was the entire answer. Not a rule, not a threat. Everybody goes.

And what did you find when you finally looked it up?

Marc: There is a law. The company has to provide it. And on the worker side, you are supposed to receive it.

Wait. The employee is required too?

Marc: Required. There is one door out, and it is narrow. You can go to your own doctor, get the same things checked, and hand your company the paperwork.

So either way, they end up with the paper.

Marc: Either way, they end up with the paper. That is the sentence I would put on a wall.

Do you know anybody who has used that door?

Marc: Not one person, in five years. Everybody just goes on the day the envelope says. And it costs me nothing, because it is on the company.

That part I am not going to argue with. A friend at home paid for blood work out of pocket last year, and when she told me the total, I had no response.

Marc: There is no response. And that is what makes this hard to be smug about in either direction.

Marc: Let me walk you through the day itself, because the day is where it stops being an idea.

Start with the night before, because the night before is its own event.

Marc: You stop eating. Mine says nothing after nine in the evening. Water is allowed, within reason.

And you have broken that rule.

Marc: My first year I had coffee, having decided inside my own head that black coffee was not food. It cost me a second morning. Now I take the earliest slot and get it over with.

Marc: You hand in your paper, you get a number and a clipboard, and you change into a set of clothes they give you.

And that is the moment it stops feeling like medicine.

Marc: It starts feeling like a very polite factory, and I do not mean that as an insult. Then it is room to room. Height. Weight. A tape measure around your middle.

That one. Nobody prepares you for that one.

Marc: Nobody does. And here is the part that got me. That is not an extra. Your waist is on the official list of things they must check.

I assumed somebody in my company had come up with it.

Marc: It is in the rules. Waist, eyes, ears, blood, urine, blood pressure, chest, and the heart one with the sticky pads and the wires.

Lie still and do not talk.

Marc: I am thirty-three and perfectly healthy, and once a year somebody records my heartbeat because the calendar said to.

In America you get that because something already happened.

Marc: That is exactly it. At home, a test like that follows an event. Here, it follows a date.

Okay. Now the barium. You are not getting out of the barium.

Marc: I was hoping we would run out of time. And one thing first. This is not on the required list. My company adds it.

Describe it for people who have never had it.

Marc: You drink something white and thick and chalky, then something else that makes your stomach expand, and you are told very clearly not to burp.

Which is immediately the only thing your body wants to do.

Marc: Then you lie on a table, the table tilts, and a voice through a speaker tells you to roll.

Turn to your right. All the way around. Hold it there. I have heard that in my sleep.

Marc: My first year I could not finish the cup. I stopped two thirds down and felt like I had failed a test. The technician said, that is enough, and moved me along.

So how do you handle it now?

Marc: I grin and bear it. There is no clever way through. You drink it, you roll where they tell you, and twenty minutes later you are holding a cup of tea in a hallway.

I did it exactly once, and then I found out there was a choice. The camera. You pay a little extra and somebody looks directly instead.

Marc: I did not know that existed until my third year. Nobody was hiding it. I simply never asked.

So now you pick the one you dislike less.

Marc: It is the lesser of two evils, and people land on different sides of it. I am still on the barium side, only because it is included and the other one is not.

That is a terrible reason.

Marc: It is an honest one. Now let me go back to the factory, because I have been unfair to it. Every station is fifteen minutes, and my first year that felt cold.

Like nobody was looking at you as a person.

Marc: Exactly. And now I think the speed is a form of respect. Half a day, my whole body checked, back at my desk before lunch.

Marc: So I am done complaining about the line. The line is why it happens to everybody, instead of only to the people who get around to it.

Although the waiting room has a problem of its own.

Marc: A social one. You are sitting in the same clothes as everybody else from your floor, holding a number, and people talk about their results out loud.

Because at home you do not tell the person from accounting what you weigh.

Marc: This year somebody asked me and I said the number, in a hallway, to a colleague. Afterwards I stood there thinking about who I have become.

Marc: The part I actually wanted to talk about is not the exam. It is the envelope that comes back about two weeks later.

With a letter next to every line.

Marc: A letter next to every line. And you learn fast which one you want, and which one makes your heart sink before you have read the word beside it.

My first year, I looked at the letters before I looked at anything else.

Marc: Everybody does. My first two years, every line came back fine. A clean bill of health, twice, and I barely read past the first page.

サラ: And the third year.

Marc: The third year there was a mark next to one line. My liver numbers were outside the range. Not dramatically. A signal rather than an emergency.

But it was still new information.

Marc: It was the first time a piece of paper had told me something about my body that I did not already know.

サラ: What did you do?

Marc: What I had trained myself to do for five years in Chicago. I folded it, put it in a drawer, and decided I would think about it later.

サラ: And later never comes.

Marc: Later never comes. Except this time it came, and it came by email. The company had a doctor look at the results.

Wait. Somebody outside the room read your numbers.

Marc: Somebody read them. And because one line had a mark on it, that doctor wanted fifteen minutes with me. It was on my calendar before I opened the message.

Marc: And that was the moment. Not the number. The number I could have ignored for another year without any trouble.

The moment was that somebody had read it.

Marc: Some person I had never met had gone down the lines of my body and stopped at one of them.

That is where I would have gotten upset.

Marc: A part of me did. And another part of me sat in that meeting and got the first honest wake-up call I had ever been handed.

サラ: What happened after?

Marc: Nothing heroic, and I am not going to hand out advice, because this was one person and one number. I cut down on the drinking, I walked more, and the next year that line came back inside the range.

サラ: So it worked.

Marc: For me, that year, on that one line. Yes.

Okay. So now you are going to tell me the system is wonderful.

Marc: I am not going to tell you that.

Good, because I have been waiting. Your company has a file with your body in it, and it keeps that file for years.

Marc: It does, and that is not me being nervous. The results get recorded and they get kept.

At home that would be illegal in about four different directions.

Marc: At least four. Where I grew up, an employer holding a document with your blood results in it is unthinkable. Here it is a form, and nobody blinks.

And I think it looks fine to you because your number came back. Ask somebody whose number did not.

Marc: You are right, and I am not going to dance around it. If what comes back is something that changes what you can do, your company knows before your family does.

Before your family. Say that part again.

Marc: Your employer finds out first. And there is nothing in the process that pauses to ask whether you wanted it in that order.

And the phrase people use is that it is for your own good.

Marc: That phrase can mean two completely different things. Sometimes it is completely true. It found something in me I would have ignored.

Marc: And sometimes it is just the reason you are not allowed to say no.

So which one is Tuesday?

Marc: I do not know. That is the honest answer. Both are true at the same time and I have not found a way to put them in order.

I will tell you where I have landed, and it is not tidy either. I want the information. I do not want the file.

Marc: And here you cannot have one without the other.

You cannot. Those are not two separate things, and that is the part I still do not have an answer for.

Marc: Neither do I. Five envelopes in, and I am no closer.

Alright. So Tuesday, eight forty. You are going.

Marc: I am going.

サラ: Because it is good?

Marc: Because it caught something once. That is a much lower bar than good. And I am going anyway.

That is the most honest thing you have said today.

Marc: It is the only part I am sure of. Somebody is keeping tabs on me, one year that turned out useful, and I am not arguing with the rest of it yet.

Ask you again after the year when the letter is not the one you wanted.

Marc: Ask me then. I might have a completely different answer.

I am doing mine in three weeks, and I am booking the camera. I am not drinking that cup again.

Marc: You have made your peace with your side of it.

I have made my peace with the drink. The file is a different story.

Marc: Any advice for somebody about to do their first one?

Eat dinner early the night before. Genuinely early. Not nine o'clock and then a snack.

Marc: And take the first slot, so you can get it over with and eat.

And if the barium beats you, it beats a lot of people. Somebody will tell you that is enough and move you along.

Marc: And when the letters come back and one is not the one you wanted, do not put it in a drawer. Somebody has already read it anyway.

Marc: That is the annual physical. My fifth one is Tuesday, and I still do not have a clean opinion about it.

Which is fine. Not everything gets a conclusion.

Marc: Not everything does. If you have done one of these, tell us which part got you. I am guessing it is the tape measure.

It is the tape measure. It is always the tape measure.

Marc: Thanks for listening, everybody.

サラ: See you next time.
