サラ: Marc, I timed myself this morning, and I do not love what I found. （日本語訳: サラ、今朝自分で時間を計ってみたんだけど、結果は全然気に入らなかった。）

Marc: That is an alarming way to open a recording. （日本語訳: レコーディングの冒頭としては、ちょっと不穏な言い方だね。）

サラ: I got to the station eleven minutes before I needed to be there. Eleven. （日本語訳: 11分だよ。11分も前に着いたの。）

Marc: And what did you do with those eleven minutes? （日本語訳: それで、その11分間はどうしてたの？）

サラ: I stood on the platform. No book, no podcast, not even my phone. Just standing. （日本語訳: ホームでただ突っ立ってた。本も、ポッドキャストも、スマホすら持ってない。ただ立ってただけ。）

Marc: That is a little bleak, honestly. （日本語訳: 正直、それはちょっと寂しいな。）

Marc: A ten o'clock meeting in Chicago began somewhere around five past. People came in holding coffee. Somebody was always finishing a call in the hallway. Marc: Here is the thing. It took me months to work out that I had not gotten lateness wrong. I had gotten the start time wrong. （日本語訳: こうなんだ。自分が遅刻を間違えたんじゃないって気づくのに何ヶ月もかかった。開始時間を間違えてたんだ。）

Marc: In Chicago, ten o'clock is when a meeting is allowed to begin. Here, ten o'clock is when the meeting is already in progress. Those are two different sentences and they use the same number. （日本語訳: シカゴでは、10時は会議が始めていい時間なんだ。日本では、10時は会議がもう進行中っていう時間なんだ。同じ数字を使ってるけど、全然違う文なんだよ。）

Marc: It is not a politeness thing at all. If the room starts on the dot, then arriving on the dot makes you late. You have to get there before the number. （日本語訳: 全然丁寧さの問題じゃない。もし部屋が時間通りに始まったら、時間通りに着くと遅刻になる。数字（10時）の前に到着しないといけないんだ。）

サラ: How far before? （日本語訳: どれくらい前に？）

Marc: Nobody has ever told me. In five years, not one person has given me a figure. （日本語訳: 誰も教えてくれたことがない。5年間、一人も具体的な数字を教えてくれた人はいない。）

Marc: Until the day it stops holding. （日本語訳: それが通用しなくなる日までね。）

サラ: Exactly. My first meeting here, I came in fourteen minutes after the hour, because I was still adding my own fifteen minutes to everything, the way I did at home. （日本語訳: そうそう。初めての会議の時、14分遅刻したんだ。だって、実家から持ってきた癖で、何にでも15分プラスしてたから。）

Marc: Fourteen. （日本語訳: 14分？）

Marc: A receipt only exists if somebody would otherwise be on the hook. That slip exists because, without it, the delay is yours. Not the railway's. Yours. （日本語訳: レシートがあるのは、そうしないと誰かが責任を負わされるからだ。その伝票があるのは、それがなければ遅延はお前のせいになるからだ。鉄道会社のせいじゃない。お前のせいだ。）

Marc: It is a very polite object sitting on top of a very hard assumption. The assumption is that being late is a thing you did. （日本語訳: それは、非常に厳しい前提の上に成り立っている、とても丁寧なものなんだ。その前提というのは、遅刻というのは君がしたことだ、ということだ。）

Marc: Which sounds better, right up until you have to plan anything. （日本語訳: どっちの方が響きがいいか、何かを計画するまではね。）

サラ: It is not better. It is just cheaper for me personally. The train arrives when it arrives. Seven fifteen, give or take fifteen. （日本語訳: 良くはないわ。ただ個人的には安上がりなだけよ。電車は、着くときに着くのよ。７時１５分、前後１５分くらいで。）

サラ: Permission to be somebody who was not at fault. （日本語訳: 自分のせいじゃないってことの許可証ね。）

Marc: Yes. And I did not know I wanted that until they took the paper away. （日本語訳: そう。それ欲しさがあったなんて、その紙がなくなって初めて気づいたよ。）

サラ: I want to push back on something, because I am not sure this country is actually good at time. （日本語訳: ちょっと反論したいんだけど、この国って時間守るのが得意なのかなって、ちょっと疑問なんだよね。）

Marc: Go on, then. （日本語訳: どうぞ。）

サラ: It is extremely good at starting. Is it any good at stopping? （日本語訳: 始めるのはすごく得意じゃない？ 終わらせるのはどうなんだろうね？）

Marc: No. And that took me the longest to see, because the starting is so loud. （日本語訳: いや、そこが一番気づくのに時間がかかったよ。だって、始まる方がすごく派手だから。）

サラ: Loud how? （日本語訳: 派手ってどういうこと？）

Marc: The train at the second. The shutter going up at exactly ten. The meeting at the top of the hour with everyone already seated. All of it is visible. You can stand there and watch it happen. （日本語訳: 電車が時間通りに来ること。シャッターがちょうど10時に上がること。会議がちょうど始業と同時に始まって、みんなもう座ってること。全部見えるんだ。そこに立って、それが起こるのを見てられる。）

Marc: The stopping does not exist. I have sat in a meeting scheduled from two to three, in this office, that ended at four twenty. （日本語訳: 終わるなんて存在しない。このオフィスで、２時から３時までの予定だった会議が、４時20分に終わったことがあるよ。）

Marc: And nobody in the room was surprised. Not one person looked at a watch. The thing was scheduled to the minute at one end and left completely open at the other. （日本語訳: 部屋にいた誰も驚いてなかった。時計を見た人も一人もいない。始まる方は分単位でキッチリ決まってるのに、終わる方は完全にオープンなんだ。）

Marc: There is no mechanism. Starting has a rule that everybody knows without being told. Ending has nothing at all. （日本語訳: 仕組みなんてない。始まる方には、言われなくてもみんなが知ってるルールがある。終わる方には、何もないんだよ。）

サラ: Who agreed to that deal? （日本語訳: 誰がその取引に合意したわけ？）

Marc: Nobody agreed to it. That is what makes it so hard to argue with. （日本語訳: 誰も合意なんてしてない。だから反論しにくいんだよ。）

サラ: Okay. Here is my problem with the whole arrangement. （日本語訳: なるほどね。この一連の取り決めについて、私の問題点はここ。）

Marc: I think I know where you are going. （日本語訳: どこを突いてくるか、なんとなくわかる気がする。）

サラ: Being early is not free. It costs time. Somebody paid for those eleven minutes I stood on the platform, and this morning it was me, and I could afford it. （日本語訳: 早めに来るのってタダじゃないんだよ。時間が必要なんだ。プラットフォームで11分立ってた時間、誰かが払ってくれたわけだけど、今朝は私で、払う余裕はあった。）

Marc: And I do not have an answer to that part. （日本語訳: その点については、私にも答えようがないな。）

サラ: If you are dropping a child off first, or getting a parent to a clinic, you are pressed for time before the day has even started. Then you are asked to arrive early on top of that. （日本語訳: もし先に子供を学校に送るとか、親を病院に連れて行くとかだったら、一日が始まる前から時間がないのに、さらに早めの到着を求められるわけだ。）

Marc: And the far end is not fixed, so you cannot plan around it either. （日本語訳: それに終点が決まってないから、それを見越した計画も立てられない。）

サラ: You cannot plan either side. You have to be early into something that will not tell you when it stops. （日本語訳: どっちの側も計画できないってことね。いつ終わるかわからないものに、早めに入らなきゃいけない。）

Marc: Right. And I want to be careful here, because I do like a lot of this. Knowing the train will be there is genuinely good. （日本語訳: そう。だから慎重に言いたいんだけど、このシステムの良いところもたくさんあるんだ。電車がちゃんと来るってわかってるのは、本当に良いことだよ。）

サラ: I like it too. I am not arguing that the trains should get worse. （日本語訳: 私も良いと思うよ。電車が悪くなるべきだって言ってるわけじゃない。）

Marc: But it cuts both ways. The same standard that gets me to work at the same minute every day is the standard keeping somebody in a room at four twenty. （日本語訳: でも、それは諸刃の剣なんだ。毎日、決まった時間に職場に着けるのと同じ基準が、４時20分に誰かを部屋に留めておく理由にもなってる。）

Marc: Every single time, with time to spare. And here is the embarrassing part. If I get there too early, I do not go in. （日本語訳: 毎回、余裕を持って。で、恥ずかしいんだけどさ。もし早すぎたら、入らないんだ。）

サラ: You do not go in? （日本語訳: 入らないの？）

Marc: I go to the convenience store on the corner and kill time for three or four minutes, and then I walk in at the correct amount of early. （日本語訳: 角のコンビニに行って、３、４分時間を潰してから、ちょうど良い早さで入るんだよ。）

サラ: There is a correct amount of early. （日本語訳: 早すぎるにも限度があるんだよ。）

Marc: There is an amount that reads as respectful and an amount that reads as a problem. Too early and the other person has to stop what they are doing and deal with you. （日本語訳: 時間通りに来るのと、問題があるくらい早く来るのと、ちゃんと区別できるだろ。早すぎると、相手は自分のやってることを中断して、お前さんのために対応しなきゃいけなくなる。）

Marc: That I want to be seen arriving early. Not simply to be early. To be observed being early. （日本語訳: 早く着いた自分を見せつけたい、ということだ。ただ早く着きたいんじゃなくて、早く着いてる自分を見てほしいんだ。）

サラ: Give me the honest summary. Are you better at time than you were five years ago? （日本語訳: 正直に要約してよ。5年前に比べて、時間管理は上手くなった？）

Marc: No. I did not get better at time. I got better at arriving. （日本語訳: いや。時間管理が上手くなったんじゃない。到着することが上手くなったんだ。）

Marc: Being good at time would mean I plan well and I protect the end of my day. I do neither of those things. What I do is show up early, which is one narrow skill. （日本語訳: 時間管理が上手いっていうのは、計画をちゃんと立てて、一日の終わりを守れるってことだ。どっちもできてない。俺がやってるのは、早く現れるっていう、一つの狭いスキルなんだ。）
