さゆり: 今日は、サラの家の角にあった八百屋さんが、店をたたんだお話です。

Marc: You told me about that store a long time ago. The vegetable place on your corner. （日本語訳: 前にその店のこと話したことあったじゃん。サラの角にある野菜屋さん。）

サラ: The vegetable place on my corner. Tanaka-san's shop. It closed this spring. （日本語訳: 私の角にある野菜屋さん？ 田中さんの店。この春に閉店しちゃったんだ。）

Marc: I did not know that. You never said anything. （日本語訳: 知らなかったよ。何も言ってなかったじゃないか。）

サラ: Nobody said anything. That is sort of the whole story, actually. （日本語訳: 誰も何も言ってなかったんだよ。それが、まあ、全部の話なんだ。）

さゆり: 田中さんは、以前サラが高熱で寝込んだときに、生姜茶とミカンを届けてくれた、あの八百屋のおばあさんです。

Marc: The one who took one look at you on the street and sent you home. （日本語訳: 一目見ただけで、サラを家に帰らせた人。）

サラ: She pointed at my building and said one word. I did not get a say in it. （日本語訳: その人は私のビルを指さして、一言だけ言ったんだ。私に選択肢はなかった。）

さゆり: 六十代の終わりか、七十代。息子のヒロシさんが週末だけ手伝っていた、小さなお店でした。

サラ: Over forty years on that corner. And then one Tuesday there was a piece of paper on the shutter. （日本語訳: あの角で40年以上やってたんだよ。それが、ある火曜日にシャッターに紙が一枚貼ってあったんだ。）

Marc: That was the announcement? A piece of paper? （日本語訳: それが告知だったの？ 紙？）

サラ: One sheet, taped at the corners. Handwritten. That was it. （日本語訳: 端をテープで貼った紙が一枚。手書き。それだけ。）

さゆり: 今日は、その紙を見た朝から、二ヶ月後にサラが電車に乗るところまで。三つの場面で聞いていきましょう。

サラ: Okay, so picture this. I leave my apartment at seven forty every single morning. （日本語訳: ねえ、想像してみて。毎朝7時40分にアパートを出るんだ。）

サラ: Fourth floor, down the stairs, out the door, turn right. The shop is on the corner. The station is two minutes past it. （日本語訳: 4階から階段を降りて、ドアを出て、右に曲がる。角にその店がある。駅はその先2分。）

Marc: So you walked by it literally every day. （日本語訳: 文字通り毎日その前を通ってたってことだね。）

サラ: Every day for two and a half years. I am a creature of habit in a way I did not know about myself until Tokyo. （日本語訳: 2年半、毎日だよ。東京に来るまで自分でも知らなかったけど、私は習慣にすごくこだわるタイプなんだ。）

さゆり: 「a creature of habit」は「決まったやり方を崩さない人」。毎日同じ道を通って、同じ店で同じものを買う。そういう人のことです。

Marc: Did you actually buy something every morning? （日本語訳: 毎朝何か買ってたの？）

サラ: Not every morning. Some mornings I just said good morning and kept walking. That was the whole transaction. （日本語訳: 毎朝じゃないよ。時々、おはようって言ってそのまま歩いてただけ。それだけのやり取り。）

サラ: But she noticed me by week three. She said, "Anata, today again the tomato? You like the tomato?" （日本語訳: でも3週目には私に気づいてたんだ。「あなた、今日もトマト？トマト好きなの？」って言ってた。）

Marc: She had been keeping count of a stranger's tomatoes. （日本語訳: 見知らぬ人のトマトの数を数えてたんだね。）

サラ: She had. And in Manhattan I lived in one building for five years and nobody learned my name. （日本語訳: そうだよ。マンハッタンでは5年間一つのアパートに住んでたけど、誰も私の名前を覚えなかったのに。）

さゆり: 八百屋さんは、レジを打つだけのお店ではないんですよね。誰が何を買ったか、そのうち覚えてしまう距離感があります。

サラ: She wrapped bananas in newspaper. One at a time. Nobody asked her to do that. （日本語訳: バナナを新聞紙で包んでくれたんだ。一個ずつ。誰も頼んでないのに。）

サラ: And in the summer, the first good peach of the season, she would hand it to me like it was expensive jewelry. （日本語訳: 夏になると、その季節で一番いい桃を、まるで高価な宝石みたいに私に手渡してくれたんだ。）

Marc: That is such a specific thing to miss. （日本語訳: それが具体的にどんなものを？って感じだね。）

サラ: That is the only kind of thing you miss. Nobody misses a category. You miss a peach in newspaper. （日本語訳: そういう具体的なものしか、人は見失わないんだよ。カテゴリーなんて誰も見失わない。新聞に挟まった桃を失うんだ。）

さゆり: サラの生活のカレンダーが、あの店の店先で回っていたわけですね。夏が来たことを、桃で知る。

Marc: Okay, so. The Tuesday. Walk me through the Tuesday. （日本語訳: なるほど。じゃあ、火曜日だね。火曜日のことを説明してよ。）

サラ: I turned the corner and the shutter was down, which was already strange, because she always opened before I left. （日本語訳: 角を曲がったら、シャッターが閉まってたんだ。これはもう、おかしいなって思った。だって、私が家を出る前にはいつも開いてたから。）

サラ: And there was this paper. And I stopped in front of it, and I read it. （日本語訳: そして、紙が貼ってあった。その前で立ち止まって、読んだんだ。）

Marc: Read it how? With the camera app? （日本語訳: どうやって読んだの？ カメラアプリとかで？）

サラ: No. That is the part that got me. I read it. Standing there. No phone. （日本語訳: いや、そこがすごいところなんだよ。読んだんだ。そこに立って。スマホなしで。）

Marc: Sarah, that is enormous. That is the thing you have been working toward for two years. （日本語訳: サラ、それはすごいことだよ。君が２年間ずっと目指してきたことじゃないか。）

サラ: I know. And the first Japanese I ever read without help was a sign telling me something was ending. （日本語訳: そうなのよ。そして、私が初めて一人で読めた日本語が、何かが終わることを告げる看板だったんだ。）

さゆり: 漢字が読めるようになった瞬間と、読めてしまったことのつらさが、同じ朝に来てしまった。

サラ: I stood there for a full minute reading four lines over and over. （日本語訳: 私はそこで１分間、４行を何度も何度も読み返したわ。）

Marc: When did you actually talk to her about it? （日本語訳: 彼女に実際に話を聞いたのはいつ？）

サラ: The next day. And I had a whole speech ready. Two questions, very carefully constructed. （日本語訳: 次の日よ。そして、完璧に準備したスピーチがあったの。２つの質問、すごく慎重に考えたやつ。）

サラ: And the entire conversation took about twenty-five seconds. （日本語訳: そして、会話全体で25秒くらいしかかからなかった。）

サラ: She said, "March." Then she said, "Hiroshi, Koenji." Then she said, "Anata, come." （日本語訳: 彼女は「３月」って言った。それから「ヒロシ、高円寺」って言った。それから「あなた、来て」って言った。）

サラ: And then she went back to putting daikon on the shelf. （日本語訳: そして、また大根を棚に並べ始めたわ。）

サラ: That was the whole exchange. And it caught me completely off guard. （日本語訳: それで全部のやり取りは終わり。私は完全に不意を突かれたわ。）

さゆり: 「catch someone off guard」は「不意を突く」。相手が構えていないところに、ぽんと入ってくる感じです。

Marc: Off guard because of the closing, or off guard because of how she said it? （日本語訳: 店じまいのことで？ それとも、彼女の話し方のことで？）

サラ: How she said it. The closing I could see coming, honestly. She had told me a long time ago that she would stop eventually. （日本語訳: 話し方よ。店じまいは、正直、予感はしてた。いつかはやめるって、ずっと前に言ってたから。）

サラ: What I was not ready for was that she was completely calm and I was the one falling apart at a vegetable shelf. （日本語訳: 私が心の準備ができてなかったのは、彼女は全く落ち着いてたのに、私が野菜棚の前で泣き崩れてたってこと。）

Marc: Okay, I have to tell you what happened in Chicago, because it is the exact opposite. （日本語訳: よし、シカゴであったことを言わなきゃ。全く逆だから。）

Marc: There was a diner two blocks from my parents' place. My family ate there for thirty years. （日本語訳: 実家の２ブロック先にダイナーがあってね。家族で３０年通ってたんだ。）

Marc: And it closed. There were signs up three months ahead. "Closing after thirty years, thank you for everything." （日本語訳: それが閉店したんだ。３ヶ月前から張り紙が出てたよ。「３０年で閉店します。今までありがとう」って。）

Marc: There was a countdown. The last night, you could not get a table. People were waiting outside in November. （日本語訳: カウントダウンがあったんだ。最後の夜は席なんて全然空いてなかった。１１月のシカゴで、外に並んでたんだよ。）

サラ: Outside. In Chicago. In November. （日本語訳: 外で？ シカゴで？ １１月に？）

Marc: And the owner came out and took pictures with every table until one in the morning. （日本語訳: オーナーが店に出てきて、朝の１時まで、全部のテーブルと写真を撮ってたんだ。）

サラ: See, that is what I thought was supposed to happen. That is the version I had in my head. （日本語訳: ほら、私はそうなるべきだと思ってたの。頭の中で描いてたのはそういうバージョン。）

Marc: Right, and here is the thing. The whole point of that night was for us, not for him. （日本語訳: そう、で、ここからが大事なところなんだ。あの夜の本当の目的は、僕らのためであって、彼のためじゃなかったんだ。）

Marc: We needed the ending. He just needed to close the door and go to bed. We made him stay up for us. （日本語訳: 僕らは終わりを必要としてた。彼はただドアを閉めて寝たかっただけ。僕らが彼に僕らのために起きてなきゃいけないようにしたんだ。）

サラ: Huh. So the last night was ours, not his. （日本語訳: ふーん。じゃあ最後の夜は、彼のものじゃなくて、私たちのものだったってことね。）

さゆり: 日本でも、こういうお店はどんどん減っています。東京の青果店でつくる組合の組合員の数は、二十年たらずで三千八百人あまりから千六百人ほどまで、半分以下になりました。

さゆり: 理由は後継者だけではありません。スーパーやコンビニ、ネット通販、それに店主の高齢化が重なっています。

サラ: And every single one of those closings was probably a piece of paper on a shutter. （日本語訳: そして、その閉店の１つ１つが、たぶんシャッターに貼られた紙切れだったんだろうね。）

さゆり: そうなんです。大きなニュースにはならない。ただ、ある日シャッターが上がらなくなる。

Marc: So you had eight weeks. What did you do with eight weeks? （日本語訳: それで８週間あったんだね。８週間で何をしたの？）

サラ: Nothing useful. I panicked, quietly, for about two months. （日本語訳: 何も有益なことは。２ヶ月くらい、静かにパニックになってた。）

Marc: Give me an example of the panicking. （日本語訳: そのパニックの例を教えて。）

サラ: I started buying way too much. I would stock up like there was a storm coming. （日本語訳: 買いすぎ始めたんだ。嵐が来るみたいに買いだめしてた。）

サラ: There was a week where I had four kilos of tomatoes in a refrigerator built for one person. （日本語訳: ある週なんて、一人暮らし用の冷蔵庫にトマトが４キロもあったんだ。）

サラ: They went soft. All of them. I threw out most of a farmer's work because I was sad. （日本語訳: 全部柔らかくなっちゃった。悲しくて、農家さんの仕事のほとんどを捨てたようなものだ。）

さゆり: 「stock up」は「後で使うためにたくさん買い込む」。台風の前や、雪が降る前によく使う言葉です。

Marc: Did anybody say anything to you about it? （日本語訳: 誰か何か言ってた？）

サラ: Mia did. She came over, opened my refrigerator, and just stood there with the door open. （日本語訳: ミアがね。彼女が来て、私の冷蔵庫を開けて、ドアを開けたままそこに立ってたんだ。）

サラ: And she said, "Sarah. You cannot save a store by eating it." （日本語訳: それで彼女が「サラ。お店を食べることで救うことはできないわよ」って言ったの。）

サラ: And she was right, and I hated that she was right. （日本語訳: 彼女の言う通りで、それがすごく嫌だった。）

さゆり: ミアさんは、サラを日本に呼んだ大学時代からの親友ですね。言いにくいことを、そのまま言える人です。

Marc: Okay, but what did you actually want to do? If money and awkwardness were not a thing. （日本語訳: で、結局何がしたかったわけ？お金とか気まずさとか抜きにして。）

サラ: A party. Obviously a party. A card that everyone on the street signs. （日本語訳: パーティーだよ。もちろんパーティー。道行く人みんなにサインしてもらうカードとか。）

サラ: A framed photo of her in front of the shop. A speech. Flowers. A post about it. （日本語訳: お店の前で撮った写真を飾って。スピーチ。花。それについての投稿。）

Marc: That is the full American package. （日本語訳: それはアメリカのフルパッケージだね。）

サラ: That is the full New York package. In New York, when something ends, you make it an event. （日本語訳: ニューヨークのフルパッケージよ。ニューヨークでは、何かが終わるとき、それをイベントにするんだ。）

サラ: You take the picture. You tell the story. You give the thing a proper funeral. （日本語訳: 写真を撮って、ストーリーを話して、ちゃんとお葬式をしてあげるの。）

さゆり: 送別会、寄せ書き、記念写真。日本にもありますけど、使う場面はもっと限られていますね。

Marc: So what did Mia tell you to do? （日本語訳: で、ミアは何て言ってた？）

サラ: She told me to do nothing at all. （日本語訳: 何もしなくていいって言ってた。）

サラ: She said, "Do not make a big deal out of it. Just keep going. Every morning. That is the whole thing." （日本語訳: 「大ごとにするな。そのまま続けろ。毎朝だ。それがすべてだ」って。）

さゆり: 「make a big deal out of something」は「大げさに騒ぐ」「おおごとにする」。今回は否定形で使われています。

Marc: And how did that land for you? Honestly. （日本語訳: で、それはどう響いた？正直に。）

サラ: Badly. I am going to be completely honest, because I do not want to tell this like a nice story. （日本語訳: 最悪だった。正直に言うけど、いい話みたいにしたくないから。）

サラ: I was angry. For about three weeks I was angry at an entire neighborhood. （日本語訳: 怒ってた。３週間くらい、地域一帯に腹を立ててた。）

Marc: Angry at who, though? At Mia? （日本語訳: 誰に怒ってたの？ミア？）

サラ: At everyone. Nobody was acting like anything was happening. （日本語訳: みんなに。誰も何も起きてないみたいにしてなかったから。）

サラ: Watanabe-san mentioned it exactly once. One sentence, while she was handing me a mandarin. （日本語訳: 渡辺さんは一度だけ触れただけ。みかんを渡されながら、一文だけ。）

Marc: What did she say? （日本語訳: 何て言ってた？）

サラ: She said the shop was closing in March, and then she moved directly on to which day the cans go out. （日本語訳: ３月に店が閉まるって言って、すぐにゴミの日の話に移ったの。）

サラ: No pause. And I stood in the hallway thinking, does nobody here feel anything. （日本語訳: 間を置かずに。廊下に立って、誰も何も感じてないのかなって思った。）

Marc: Can I push on that a little? Is it possible that was just people not caring very much? That is allowed to be the answer. （日本語訳: ちょっと突っ込んでもいい？ただ、みんなあんまり気にしてなかったって可能性はない？それもアリってことだよね。）

サラ: It is allowed to be the answer, and I believed it was the answer for about three weeks. （日本語訳: それもアリな答えだし、３週間くらいはそれが答えだって信じてたよ。）

サラ: And then I started actually watching the street instead of just being angry at it. （日本語訳: そしたら、怒るだけじゃなくて、ちゃんと道を見るようになったんだ。）

Marc: What did you see? （日本語訳: 何を見たの？）

サラ: The regulars did not stop coming. They came more. The same faces, every day, more often than before. （日本語訳: 常連さん、全然来なくなるどころか、もっと来たんだよ。いつもの顔ぶれが、前よりも頻繁に。）

サラ: Nobody said why. Nobody said anything sad. They just showed up and bought vegetables until there were no more vegetables. （日本語訳: 理由は誰も言わない。悲しいことなんて誰も言わない。ただ来て、野菜がなくなるまで買っていったんだ。）

Marc: Oh. That is the card. That is the whole card, signed by the whole street. （日本語訳: あー。それがカードなんだ。通り中の人が書いた、あのカード。）

サラ: That is what took me three weeks to see. They were saying it. I was listening for the wrong sound. （日本語訳: それが見えるようになるのに３週間かかったんだ。彼女たちはそう言ってたんだね。私は聞くべき音と違う音を聞いていた。）

さゆり: 日本では、別れを大げさにしないことが、相手への配慮になる場合があります。相手に「気をつかわせない」ためです。

さゆり: 以前、結婚式のお話をしたときにも近いことがありましたね。感情がないのではなく、出す場所が決まっている。

サラ: And I do not think either version here is the correct one. （日本語訳: で、どっちのバージョンも正解じゃないと思うんだ。）

サラ: The Chicago diner night sounds genuinely wonderful and I would have loved it. （日本語訳: シカゴのダイナーの夜は、本当に素晴らしかっただろうし、私も行きたかったよ。）

Marc: I can hear a "but" coming. （日本語訳: でも、が聞こえるんだけど。）

サラ: But it is also a little bit for the people staying, not the person leaving. We get our ending. She gets a long night. （日本語訳: でも、それは滞在する人のためでもあるんだよ。去る人のためじゃなくて。私たちは結末をもらうけど、彼女は長い夜をもらうんだ。）

サラ: And the other thing I finally got is that she had been a fixture for forty years. （日本語訳: で、私がついに理解したもう一つのことは、彼女が40年間、ずっとそこにあった存在だったってこと。）

サラ: You do not throw a party for a fixture. You just keep using it until the day it is gone. （日本語訳: 長年そこにあるものに、パーティーなんてしないよ。なくなってしまうその日まで、ただ使い続けるだけ。）

さゆり: 「a fixture」は、その場所に長くいて、あって当たり前になっている人や物のこと。「街の一部」という感覚です。

Marc: That is a little brutal when you say it out loud. （日本語訳: それを口に出すと、ちょっと残酷だね。）

サラ: It is brutal. Being taken for granted and being loved look identical from the outside. （日本語訳: 残酷だよ。当たり前だと思われることと、愛されることは、外から見たら全く同じなんだ。）

サラ: The whole street took her for granted. That is what forty years buys you. （日本語訳: 通り中の人が彼女を当たり前の存在だと思っていた。それが40年続けるってことだよ。）

Marc: Okay. The last day. I want the whole last day. （日本語訳: わかった。最後の日。最後の一日を全部聞かせて。）

サラ: I went at opening. Seven o'clock. I had not been outside that early in two and a half years. （日本語訳: 開店と同時に行ったんだ。７時。２年半ぶりにそんな早い時間に出かけたよ。）

サラ: Half the crates were already gone. The shelves on the left side were completely empty. （日本語訳: もう棚の半分は空になってた。左側の棚は完全に空っぽ。）

サラ: It was steadily busy. Not a crowd, not a line. Just people, one after another, the way it always was. （日本語訳: ひっきりなしに人が来てた。混雑してるわけでも、列があるわけでもない。ただ、いつものように、次から次へと人が。）

サラ: And Hiroshi was there, on a weekday, which never happened. He was breaking down boxes in the back. （日本語訳: ひろしも来てたんだ、平日に。ありえないよ。彼は裏で段ボールを片付けてた。）

Marc: How was she? （日本語訳: 彼女、どうだった？）

サラ: Exactly the same. Almost stubbornly the same. Business as usual. （日本語訳: 全然変わらなかった。頑ななくらい変わらなかったよ。いつも通り。）

さゆり: 「business as usual」は「いつも通り」。何かが起きているのに、変わらず普段どおりに進んでいる状態です。

サラ: She was stacking crates the way she stacked them every other morning of her life. （日本語訳: 毎朝、他の日と変わらず、彼女が箱を積んでるのを見てね。）

Marc: And meanwhile you are standing there after two months of building up to it. （日本語訳: それで君は、２ヶ月もかけて準備してきたのに、ただそこに立ってたんだね。）

サラ: Two months. And I had one sentence that I had been practicing for two weeks. （日本語訳: ２ヶ月よ。そして私は２週間かけて練習した一言があったの。）

サラ: In Japanese. And two weeks is not an exaggeration. I practiced it in the shower. （日本語訳: 日本語でね。２週間というのは大げさじゃない。シャワーの中でも練習したんだから。）

さゆり: サラが練習したのは、「ながいあいだ、ありがとうございました」。長い年月に対するお礼の言葉です。

サラ: I wanted it to be right. It felt like the one thing I could actually control. （日本語訳: ちゃんと伝えたかったの。それが唯一、自分でコントロールできることだと思ったから。）

サラ: So I said it. And my voice did the thing where it goes up at the end and stops working. （日本語訳: それで言ったんだけど、声が最後につり上がって、もう出なくなっちゃった。）

サラ: I had a lump in my throat the size of a fist and I got maybe eighty percent of the words out. （日本語訳: 喉にこぶし大の塊ができて、言葉の８割くらいしか出なかったと思う。）

さゆり: 「a lump in my throat」は、泣きたくて喉が詰まる感じ。日本語の「胸が詰まる」「胸がいっぱいになる」と同じ感覚です。

Marc: What did she do? （日本語訳: それで、彼女は何をしたの？）

サラ: She looked at me. For about two seconds, which is a long time when somebody looks at you. （日本語訳: 私を見たの。２秒くらいね。誰かに見られると、それはすごく長い時間なんだよ。）

サラ: And then she picked up a tomato and put it in my hand and said, "Today, no money." （日本語訳: それでトマトを手に取って私の手に乗せて、「今日は、お金いらない」って言ったの。）

サラ: And then she said, "Koenji. You come." And then she bowed once and went back to the crates. （日本語訳: それから「高円寺。おいで」って言って、一度お辞儀をして、また箱に戻っていった。）

サラ: And that was the goodbye. Fifteen seconds, one tomato, and back to work. （日本語訳: それがお別れだった。15秒、トマト１個、そして仕事に戻っていった。）

さゆり: 日本人の感覚だと、ものすごく気持ちがこもっている状況ですね。

Marc: I think I have seen this exact thing and I did not know what I was looking at. （日本語訳: それ、どこかで見たことある気がする。何を見てたのか分からなかったけど。）

サラ: I walked to the station and I made it about forty steps and then I cried on the platform. （日本語訳: 駅まで歩いて、40歩くらい歩いたところで、ホームで泣いちゃった。）

サラ: Which, for the record, is a very New York place to cry. Nobody looks at you. （日本語訳: ちなみに、ニューヨークでは泣くのにすごくいい場所なんだよ。誰も見ないから。）

サラ: And here is what I did not expect at all. It did not hurt that week. （日本語訳: そして、まったく予想してなかったことがあった。その週は、つらくなかったんだ。）

サラ: I was busy having feelings about it, and that is different from missing it. （日本語訳: そのことについて感情的になってただけで、それが、それを恋しく思うこととは違うんだ。）

サラ: It had not sunk in yet. It sank in about ten days later. （日本語訳: まだ、実感が湧かなかったんだ。それが湧いてきたのは、10日後くらいだった。）

さゆり: 「it has not sunk in yet」は「まだ実感がわかない」。頭では分かっているのに、気持ちがまだ追いついていない状態です。

Marc: What happened ten days later? （日本語訳: 10日後、何があったの？）

サラ: I came home late, opened my refrigerator, and there were no tomatoes. And I reached for my coat. （日本語訳: 遅く帰宅して冷蔵庫を開けたら、トマトがなかったの。それでコートに手を伸ばした。）

サラ: I got one arm into my coat before I remembered there was nowhere to go. （日本語訳: コートに片腕を通したところで、行くところがなかったのを思い出した。）

サラ: That was the moment. Standing in a kitchen wearing half a coat. （日本語訳: その瞬間よ。キッチンに立って、コートを半分着た状態で。）

Marc: What is on the corner now? （日本語訳: 今、角には何がある？）

サラ: Nothing. The shutter is still down. There is a little rust on the bottom edge already. （日本語訳: 何もない。シャッターはまだ下りたまま。端っこにはもう錆びが少し浮いてる。）

サラ: And my walk to the station is about forty seconds faster, and I hate it. （日本語訳: 駅までの道のりが40秒くらい短くなって、それが嫌なの。）

サラ: In New York I would have taken forty seconds any day of the week. （日本語訳: ニューヨークなら、週に何日でも40秒は取るよ。）

Marc: Very casual. Of course. （日本語訳: すごくカジュアル。もちろん。）

サラ: I changed my shirt twice before I left. （日本語訳: 家を出る前にシャツを2回も着替えたんだ。）

さゆり: 「for old times' sake」は「昔のよしみで」「懐かしさから」。旧友に会いに行くときによく使う言い方です。

Marc: Okay. What is the new place like? （日本語訳: なるほど。新しい店はどうだった？）

サラ: Brighter. Newer. Better lighting, a real awning, prices printed instead of written by hand. （日本語訳: もっと明るくて、新しくて。照明も良くて、ちゃんとしたオーニングがあって、値段は手書きじゃなくて印刷されてた。）

サラ: It is in the middle of a shopping street, so there is noise coming from both sides. （日本語訳: 商店街の真ん中にあるから、両側から音が聞こえてくるの。）

サラ: Hiroshi runs it now. He was out front, doing the thing where he talks to four people at once. （日本語訳: 今はヒロシさんがやってる。店の前で、4人と同時に話してる、あの仕草をしてた。）

Marc: Was she there? （日本語訳: 彼女はそこにいた？）

サラ: She was in the back. On a stool. Not working. Just sitting there with her hands in her lap. （日本語訳: 彼女は奥にいたの。スツールに座って。働いてなくて、ただ膝に手を置いて座ってた。）

サラ: Word for word. The exact sentence from week three, two and a half years later, in a different neighborhood. （日本語訳: 一字一句そのまま。３週間前と同じセリフを、２年半後に、違う地域で言われたんだよ。）

Marc: So the ending is good. The store did not die, it moved. （日本語訳: じゃあ、結末はハッピーエンドってことだね。店は潰れず、移転したんだ。）

サラ: And this is the part where I am supposed to say that everything is fine, and I am not going to say that. （日本語訳: で、ここで私は「全部大丈夫」って言うべきなんだけど、それは言わない。）

Marc: Okay. Say the true one. （日本語訳: よし。本当の気持ちを言って。）

サラ: The store moved. My corner did not. Those are two different losses and only one of them got fixed. （日本語訳: 店は移転した。私の角はそのまま。それは２つの違う喪失で、１つしか解決してない。）

サラ: I go about once a month now. It is a trip I decide to take. It used to be a stop I never thought about. （日本語訳: 今じゃ月に１回くらい行くかな。それは「行く」って決めていく旅行みたいなもの。昔は、何も考えずに寄る場所だったのに。）

サラ: The closing did not surprise me. How calm she was about it caught me off guard. （日本語訳: 閉店は驚かなかった。彼女があれほど冷静だったことに、私は意表を突かれたわ。）

さゆり: 「不意を突く」。相手が構えていないところに来る、という感じの表現です。

サラ: "A fixture." （日本語訳: 「なくてはならない存在」）

Marc: A person or thing that has been somewhere so long that you stop noticing they are there. （日本語訳: ある場所にとどまりすぎて、そこにいることに気づかなくなるような人や物のことだよ。）

サラ: She was a fixture on that corner for over forty years. Nobody thought about it until she left. （日本語訳: 彼女は40年以上もあの角の「なくてはならない存在」だったの。いなくなるまで、誰も気にも留めなかった。）

さゆり: 「その場所に長くいて、あって当たり前になっている人や物」。「街の一部」という感覚に近い言葉です。

サラ: "Make a big deal out of something." （日本語訳: 「大げさに騒ぎ立てる」）

Marc: To treat something as much bigger than it is. Usually somebody is telling you not to. （日本語訳: 実際よりもずっと大きなこととして扱うこと。たいてい、誰かがそうしないように言っているときだよ。）

サラ: Mia told me not to make a big deal out of it. She was right and I did not enjoy it. （日本語訳: ミアは私に大げさに騒ぐなと言ったんだけど、彼女の言う通りだったし、私は楽しめなかったわ。）

さゆり: 「大げさに騒ぐ」「おおごとにする」。「そんなに騒がないで」と言うときの定番の言い方です。

サラ: "Business as usual." （日本語訳: 「いつも通り」）

Marc: When everything continues in the normal way, even though something big is going on. （日本語訳: 何か大きなことが起こっているのに、すべてが普段通りに続くときだよ。）

サラ: It was her last morning and she was stacking crates. Business as usual, right to the end. （日本語訳: 彼女にとって最後の日だったのに、 crates を積んでいたの。いつも通り、最後までね。）

さゆり: 「いつも通り」。何かが起きているのに、普段どおりに進んでいる状態を表します。

サラ: "It has not sunk in yet." （日本語訳: 「まだ実感がない」）

Marc: When you know a fact, but your body has not caught up to it. （日本語訳: 事実を知っていても、体がまだそれに追いついていない状態のことだよ。）

サラ: It had not sunk in until I reached for my coat to go buy tomatoes from a shop that was gone. （日本語訳: トマトを買いに行こうとコートに手を伸ばしたとき、なくなった店のために、まだ実感できなかったわ。）

さゆり: 「まだ実感がわかない」。頭では分かっているのに、気持ちが追いついていない状態です。

サラ: And the last one. "For old times' sake." （日本語訳: そして最後。「昔を懐かしんで」）

Marc: When you do something because of good memories, not because you need to. （日本語訳: 必要だからではなく、良い思い出のために何かをするときだよ。）

サラ: I got on the train for old times' sake. And then I changed my shirt twice, so, you know. （日本語訳: 昔を懐かしんで電車に乗ったの。そして2回も服を着替えたから、まあ、ね。）

さゆり: 「昔のよしみで」「懐かしさから」。久しぶりに旧友に会いに行くときによく使う表現です。

さゆり: 今日は、街の角から一つの店がなくなるまでの、二ヶ月のお話でした。

Marc: Sarah, thank you for not making that neat. The messy version is more useful to me. （日本語訳: サラ、それをきちんと整理しなかったことに感謝するよ。ぐちゃぐちゃな方が僕には役に立つ。）

サラ: It is the only version I have. I am still a little annoyed about the forty seconds. （日本語訳: それが私の持っている唯一のバージョンよ。あの40秒については、まだ少し腹が立っているわ。）

さゆり: 皆さんの街にも、あって当たり前だったお店はありませんか。

Marc: If you have one right now, go there this week. That is my whole takeaway from this episode. （日本語訳: もし今すぐ、そういう場所があるなら、今週そこに行きなさい。このエピソードから得られるのは、それだけだよ。）
