サラ: I rescheduled my entire Saturday yesterday because of rain that had not fallen yet. （日本語訳: 昨日、まだ降ってない雨のせいで、土曜日の予定を全部リスケしちゃったんだ。）

Marc: Rain that had not fallen yet. （日本語訳: まだ降ってない雨。）

サラ: Rain that is sitting somewhere south of here right now, deciding what it wants to be. （日本語訳: 今、この辺の南で、どうなるか決めてる雨のこと？）

Marc: You are talking about the typhoon. （日本語訳: 台風のことね。）

サラ: I am talking about the typhoon. And the part I want to get to is this. I never once looked at the sky. I looked at a train company. （日本語訳: そう、台風。で、言いたいのはここから。空は一度も見てない。電車の会社を見たんだ。）

Marc: That may be the most Tokyo sentence you have ever said out loud. （日本語訳: それは今までサラが言ったことの中で一番東京っぽいセリフかも。）

サラ: Two and a half years ago I would not have understood it. Where I grew up, weather is something that happens to you. （日本語訳: 2年半前だったら、このセリフの意味は分からなかっただろうな。私が育ったところじゃ、天気ってのは自分に起こるものだったから。）

Marc: And here it is what, exactly? （日本語訳: で、ここでは何、 exactly?）

Marc: And then? （日本語訳: それで？）

Marc: That is the detail that would have finished me. （日本語訳: それが私をダメにしたディテールだね。）

Marc: The Chicago version of this is different. We get sirens. （日本語訳: シカゴ版は違うよ。サイレンが鳴るんだ。）

Marc: Tornado sirens, and they buy you minutes. Not days. The siren goes, you go down to the basement, and then it either happens or it does not. （日本語訳: トルネードサイレンだよ。それで数分猶予ができるんだ。数日じゃない。サイレンが鳴ったら地下に降りて、それから起こるか起こらないかだ。）

Marc: And that still strikes you as strange. （日本語訳: それでも奇妙に思えるんだ。）

サラ: It astonishes me. Where I am from, the subway stops when it stops. You find out standing on the platform. （日本語訳: 驚くわよ。私がいたところでは、地下鉄は止まる時に止まるの。ホームに立ってから知るんだから。）

Marc: From an announcement nobody can make out. （日本語訳: 誰も聞き取れないアナウンスからね。）

Marc: What did you do with your two days? （日本語訳: その2日間、どうしたの？）

Marc: What did your office tell you? （日本語訳: オフィスからは何て言われたの？）

サラ: My office told us to use our own judgment. （日本語訳: オフィスからは、各自の判断で、って言われた。）

Marc: There it is. （日本語訳: そういうことか。）

サラ: There it is. The train company gave me a time. My office gave me a judgment call to make. （日本語訳: そういうこと。鉄道会社は時間を教えてくれた。オフィスは判断を委ねてきた。）

Marc: To be fair, what would you want them to say? （日本語訳: 公平に見て、何て言ってほしいの？）

サラ: A time. That is all. Noon, like the trains. Then nobody has to guess what kind of employee they are. （日本語訳: 時間。それだけ。正午とか、電車と同じ時刻。そうすれば、誰も自分がどんな従業員なのかを推測する必要がなくなる。）

Marc: Because that is what you are actually guessing. （日本語訳: だって、それが実際にあなたが推測していることだから。）

サラ: That is what you are actually guessing. Nobody on that platform was making a decision about weather. They were deciding how they would look on Monday. （日本語訳: それ、まさにあなたが推測してることだよ。そのプラットフォームにいた誰も、天候について判断していたわけじゃない。月曜日にどう見えるかを考えていたんだ。）

Marc: I will give you that one with no argument at all. （日本語訳: その点は反論の余地なく認めるよ。）

Marc: No. The notice itself is genuinely good. What happens to the notice once it reaches an office is not the train company's problem, but it is somebody's. （日本語訳: いや。通知自体は確かに良いものだ。通知がオフィスに着いてからどうなるかは、鉄道会社の責任ではないが、誰かの責任ではある。）

サラ: Most people would call that being calm about it. （日本語訳: 大抵の人は、それは落ち着いていることだと言うだろうね。）

Marc: It is not calm. I have been trained, and I turned out to be a good student. （日本語訳: 落ち着いているんじゃない。訓練されたんだ、そして僕は良い生徒になった。）

Marc: And the trains. （日本語訳: 電車は？）

サラ: Running. Normally. Not recovering, not on a reduced timetable. Running. （日本語訳: 動いてた。普通に。復旧作業中とか、ダイヤが減ってるとかじゃなくて、普通に。）

Marc: That part I have stopped being surprised by, and I am not certain that is a good thing. （日本語訳: その話はもう驚かなくなったよ。それは良いことなのか分からないけどね。）

サラ: And what got me was not the cleanup at all. （日本語訳: それで私を驚かせたのは、片付けなんかじゃ全然なかったんだ。）

Marc: You said fine. （日本語訳: 良かった、って言ったんだ。）

Marc: Whereas in New York. （日本語訳: 一方、ニューヨークだと。）

サラ: A storm back home is worth a week. Everybody has a version. The tree that came down on their block, the station that flooded, the car somebody left in the wrong place. （日本語訳: 故郷の嵐は1週間分のネタになる。みんなそれぞれの話があるんだ。自分の通りに倒れた木の話とか、浸水した駅とか、間違った場所に停めた車の話とか。）

Marc: And that stops here. （日本語訳: ここで終わりよ。）

サラ: It is closed by nine on Monday morning. The entire thing. （日本語訳: 月曜の朝9時には閉まってんのよ。全部。）

Marc: I want to be careful with you here, because I think you are about to make this sad. （日本語訳: そこは慎重に話したいんだけど、今から悲しい話にするんじゃないかって気がする。）

Marc: Somebody was out at four in the morning so that seven o'clock could look like that. Moving those sandbags. Clearing the tracks. Getting that shutter up. （日本語訳: 誰かが朝4時に出てたんだ、7時のために。土嚢を運んだり、線路を片付けたり、シャッターを上げたり。）

サラ: It is a completely different thing. Taping that window was the last time I felt like I was doing something about the weather instead of scheduling around it. （日本語訳: 全然違うことだよ。窓にガムテ貼ったのが、天気に対して何かしてるって感じた最後だった。それ以外は全部、天気に合わせて予定を組んでるだけ。）

Marc: One question, and I already know my own answer to it. Have you ever actually stayed home? （日本語訳: 一つ聞きたいんだけど、もう自分で答えは分かってる。実際に家にいたことある？）

Marc: Whatever you are going to move, move it on the first day you hear about it. Not the second. By the second day everybody else has caught up with you. （日本語訳: 移動させるものがあったら、そのことを聞き始めた初日に移動させて。2日目じゃない。2日目には、他の人もみんな同じことをしてるから。）
