Welcome to Sukima English News! I'm Sarah. (「Sukima English News」

And I'm Marc.

Today we have three stories: an AI that reads your paper and tells you where the argument falls apart, a doctor who refuses to buy a ripe banana, and the one number Japan has decided not to write down.

An AI, a banana, and a budget. Let's get into it. (AI

Google released a tool called Deep Review on October 14th. It reads a paper or a technical document and flags the places where the logic contradicts itself, or where a claim isn't backed up by enough evidence.

So, not a grammar checker.

Not at all. A grammar checker looks at your sentences. This one looks at your argument. It also checks whether the equations are right, and it compares what you're saying with existing research.

How does it read something that long?

It splits the document into parts, and it gives more computing power to the complicated parts. Then several AIs check those parts at the same time.

In parallel. That's fast.

And here's the clever bit. Each one can see the whole document, not just its own section. So it can catch a sentence in chapter two that quietly contradicts chapter nine.

That's exactly the mistake a human reader makes. By chapter nine, you've forgotten chapter two.

Right. At the end, another AI pulls the results together and checks the document as a whole against outside evidence. But the final judgment stays with a person. Google is clear about that.

Who can use it?

Anyone, anywhere in the world, free, up to twice a week. It takes PDFs and plain text for now, and if you connect a Gemini API key, you can go past that limit.

Twice a week is plenty for a student writing one paper. Not much for a lab running ten.

That's the trade. And it isn't only for papers. Google suggests running it on design documents, to surface the assumptions that nobody wrote down.

Oh, that's a good one. Every design document has those.

There's a slide deck use as well. It checks whether the point written on a slide actually matches the graph sitting next to it.

I have definitely sat through that meeting.

The tool has a predecessor, by the way. It was called the Paper Assistant Tool, and it was for researchers only.

How much did it get used?

Google worked with four major computer science conferences, and offered an optional pre-review on more than sixteen thousand submitted papers.

Sixteen thousand. That's a big conference's entire intake, several years over.

One more thing, because people will ask. Google says the documents you upload aren't used to train or improve its models. They're kept for one year, so you can look back at them.

That part matters. Nobody wants their unpublished work feeding a model.

Our next story takes us to Toyo Keizai Online, and to a doctor who will not buy a bright yellow banana.

Won't buy one?

Won't buy one. This is Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a project professor at the Juntendo University School of Medicine, and he's writing about his new book. In the supermarket, he goes for the bananas with green still on them.

Why green?

Fiber. Or rather, the type of fiber. We usually split dietary fiber into two kinds. Insoluble fiber is the one in carrots, burdock, wheat, rye and beans. It swells up inside you and gets the gut moving.

And the other kind?

Soluble fiber, in things like natto, okra, cabbage, and seaweeds such as mozuku and mekabu. It wraps around the food, picks up extra sugar and fat, and then it ferments, and that fermented fiber feeds the good bacteria.

So one pushes things along, and the other feeds the bacteria.

Exactly. And then there's a third one, which is what this article is really about. Resistant starch. The name means starch that resists digestion, so it reaches your gut almost untouched.

And it does which job?

Both of them. It stimulates the gut the way insoluble fiber does, and it ferments and feeds the good bacteria the way soluble fiber does. Kobayashi calls it the best of both.

And bananas are full of it.

They are. He admits a few foods have more. But a banana needs no cooking, it's cheap, and you don't get tired of eating one every day. So for him, the banana is the king of resistant starch.

Then why the green one?

Because the resistant starch drops as the banana ripens to yellow. The greener it is, the more of it is still in there. He looks for what's called a green tip, where the stem is still green, and he eats it before that green fades.

How many?

Two a day. The timing is up to you, but most people manage it in the morning, and he likes that. Breakfast wakes the gut up, it helps memory and concentration through the day, and it steadies your autonomic nervous system.

Banana and yogurt, and you're done.

That's literally his suggestion. His point is that the worst option is skipping breakfast altogether.

And if you have five minutes, grill the banana on a low heat. Some of the starch turns into oligosaccharides, which is more food for the good bacteria.

Grilled banana for the bacteria. I like that.

He has a word for all of this. He calls it cho-iku, which you could translate as raising your gut, and he's careful to separate it from the more familiar cho-katsu, gut care.

What's the difference?

Gut care is food and supplements. He says that's like forcing a child into a lesson that never sticks. Raising the gut means rebuilding the whole base: diet, exercise, daily rhythm, stress. He calls the gut the water source of your health.

And if the water source is dirty, everything downstream is dirty too.

That's his argument.

For our last story, a number that Japan has decided not to write down. The Asahi Shimbun reports that the government is leaning toward leaving the figure of 3.5 percent of GDP out of its defense plans for the next five years.

Whose figure is 3.5 percent? (3.5%

Washington's. Japan is revising its three security documents by the end of the year, and according to several government sources, the Trump administration has pressed Japan behind the scenes, calling 3.5 percent of GDP the global standard for allies.

And Japan doesn't want to spell it out.

Doesn't want to spell it out. The reason is money. At 3.5 percent, defense spending would run past twenty trillion yen a year, and to find that, a tax increase would be unavoidable.

Put twenty trillion next to something, so people can feel it.

Here's the comparison, and it's in the same article. Inside the prime minister's office, officials are already saying that ten trillion yen a year is not enough.

Three point five percent would be roughly double the number they're calling not enough. (3.5%

So it isn't a stretch. It's a different budget entirely.

And the politics make it harder. The government is cutting the consumption tax on food to ease the burden on households. Asking those same households to take on a big new burden in the same year is a hard sell.

You can't give with one hand and take with the other in the same year.

That's the calculation. There's also a view inside the government that the United States may not insist on the wording at all.

Why not?

Because what Washington seems to care about is long-term strength, including Japan's defense industrial base. Not a percentage printed in a document.

So, show the direction, skip the number.

That's the approach. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is pushing to strengthen Japan's defense from the ground up, pointing to how severe the security environment has become.

Spending is still going up sharply, and that includes the related costs outside the core budget.

Just without the line that pins them to 3.5 percent.

Without that line. The hope is that showing the direction is enough to win Washington over.
