Welcome to Sukima English News! I'm Sarah.

And I'm Marc.

Today, three stories from Japan — a "phantom mole" turning up in a World Heritage forest, two actresses swapping nationalities on screen, and a three-strikes rule for pilots at Haneda.

A mole, a movie, and air traffic control. That's quite a mix. Let's get into it.

Our first story comes from Aomori. A research group at Hirosaki University says it has confirmed a rare mole in the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage site for the very first time.

A mole? What makes this one worth a headline?

It's called the mizura-mogura — in English, the Japanese mountain mole. In Japan people call it the "phantom mole," because so little is known about how it actually lives.

The phantom mole. So it's not that it's big or beautiful. It's that nobody ever sees it.

Right. It's a small mole, and it's endemic to Japan — you won't find it anywhere else in the world.

And where does it normally turn up?

In forests, from Hiroshima in the west all the way north to Aomori. But the populations are cut off from each other in little pockets.

That sounds fragile.

It is. It's listed as Near Threatened on the Environment Ministry's Red List.

So how did they find one this time?

Back in 2019, Professor Takayuki Nakamura found a dead mole on a walking trail near the Anmon Falls, in Nishimeya Village. About 320 meters up.

A dead one. So they had an actual specimen to work with.

Exactly. The body was about nine centimeters long, not counting the tail. They took it back, went over it in detail, and identified it as a Japanese mountain mole.

Nine centimeters — that's about the length of your thumb and index finger side by side. Tiny. (9

Tiny, and easy to miss. Which is a big part of why it took this long.

Had anyone found one in Aomori before?

Yes. There are records of a bit over twenty animals in the prefecture. But most of them came from the Hakkoda mountains, over on the other side.

So Shirakami-Sanchi is genuinely new ground for this species.

It is. And the records cover a wide range of elevations, from 60 meters up to 1,050.

That's a big comfort zone for such a small animal.

One of the researchers, Assistant Professor Chie Murano, put it this way. The mole may well live across the whole of Shirakami-Sanchi, including the Akita side, where there are no records at all yet.

So the Akita side may simply never have been looked at closely.

That seems to be the picture. And she says the team wants to work out how the animal really lives.

I like that. A World Heritage site people have walked through for decades, and there's still something under the soil nobody had written down.

The findings were published in the journal Mammalian Science, in the July issue.

A quiet result, but a real one.

Next up, a film story — and a casting choice that's turning heads.

What's the film?

It's called "Katai." It's a Japan-Korea co-production, and it opens on February 5th next year.

Who's in it?

Two leads. Erika Karata, the Japanese actress — she's 28 — and Jiyoung, who's 32, from the K-pop group KARA.

KARA. A lot of our listeners will know that name. (KARA。

They will. And here's the twist. Karata, who's Japanese, plays a Korean character. Jiyoung, who's Korean, plays a Japanese one.

They swapped. That's a bold thing to ask of an actor.

It really is. You're not just learning lines. You're carrying somebody else's language and somebody else's background.

Have the two of them worked together before?

No. This is the first time they've co-starred.

So it's a first meeting and a role reversal at the same time.

Karata called it a new challenge, and you can see why.

What's the story based on?

A novel of the same name by Shiho Tanimura. Ei Yamada is directing.

Do we know much about the plot yet?

Not much has been made public. Right now, the casting is the story.

Which is fair enough, honestly. A choice like that says something on its own.

It does. Think about what the audience does with it. A Japanese viewer hears a familiar face speaking as a Korean character.

And a Korean audience gets the mirror image.

Exactly. That's a very different experience from just reading subtitles.

February 5th. That's a long wait. (2

It is. But I'm curious how the two of them pull it off.

Our last story takes us to the skies over Tokyo. It turns out the transport ministry has been running a new rule at Haneda Airport since May — and it's only just come to light.

Since May? So this has been in place for months already. (5

For months. And it's aimed at small aircraft — business jets and privately owned planes.

Not the big passenger airlines, then.

Not the airlines. And the rule works a bit like baseball. Three strikes, and you're out.

Three strikes meaning what, exactly? (3

If a captain fails to follow air traffic control instructions three times, their use of Haneda gets restricted.

Restricted. So they lose access to the airport.

That's the shape of it. The ministry calls it a "count system." Each violation is counted against that pilot.

And it's the captain personally, not the airline or the operator.

That's right. The count follows the person in the left-hand seat.

That's an unusual way to set it up.

It is. And think about which airport we're talking about. Haneda is one of the busiest in the world.

Right. At that kind of traffic level, one aircraft doing something unexpected doesn't stay a small problem for long.

Exactly. Everything there runs on a very tight sequence. Everyone has to do what they're told, when they're told.

So a business jet that turns the wrong way isn't just being awkward. It's sitting in somebody else's slice of runway.

That's the worry.

How much detail has the ministry actually put out?

Not a lot, honestly. We know the rule and we know when it started. The reasoning behind it hasn't been spelled out in public.

So the news here is really that it exists at all.

That's it. Somebody quietly turned on a count system at Japan's busiest airport, and nobody outside the industry knew.

And for an operator who does get restricted, what's the damage?

They lose one of Japan's most useful airports. For business aviation, that's not a small penalty.

No, it isn't. Haneda sits right next to central Tokyo. That's most of the reason people fly private in the first place.

Which is presumably why the rule has teeth.

Three strikes. Easy to explain, hard to argue with.

And now that it's out in the open, everyone flying in knows the count is running.
