Welcome to Sukima English News! I'm Sarah.

And I'm Marc.

Today, three stories from Japan — Samsung's new Galaxy phones and a big chip decision, a new-look Shinkansen inspired by the sea, and a mixed-up summer festival in Osaka.

A tech story, a design story, and a community story. Let's get into it.

Our first story is Samsung's "Galaxy Unpacked" event, held in London on July 22nd.

Samsung usually shows off a lot at Unpacked. What was the headline this time?

The headline was the chips. Every single new device runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon.

Every single one? That's a big shift for Samsung.

It really is. Three new foldable phones — the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Z Flip 8 — all run on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

What about the wearables?

Same story. The Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 use Snapdragon Wear Elite, and Samsung's new smart glasses — a joint project with Google — use Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1.

So Snapdragon is now inside every new Galaxy device across the lineup.

Right. And that's what makes it a real turning point. For years, Samsung mixed things up — Snapdragon on some phones, their own Exynos chips on others.

How did that split usually go?

Well, on the foldables, the Z Fold usually ran Snapdragon, and the Z Flip usually ran Exynos. This time, even the Z Flip switched to Snapdragon.

Interesting. Why the switch?

Samsung said it came from customer feedback. Before the event, they told reporters this was a decision to respond to what users wanted.

So the users basically voted for Snapdragon.

In a way, yes. And an analyst at CCS Insight, Ben Wood, called it "an astonishing feat for Qualcomm."

Astonishing feat — meaning Qualcomm sweeping a rival's flagship lineup is really unusual.

Exactly. Samsung's own chip team is right there, and Snapdragon still won.

Qualcomm's CEO Cristiano Amon was on stage too, right? What did he say about the partnership?

He called it "a rare partnership, built on innovation, technical cooperation, trust, and a shared commitment to expanding the Galaxy ecosystem."

Big language. Anything more concrete?

Yes. Chris Patrick, who leads Qualcomm's handset business, said this kind of tie-up starts years before a phone ships. He said, "You can't just show up late in the process and work with a company like Samsung — you have to start years ahead."

So it's not just picking a chip off the shelf.

Not at all. Patrick said Qualcomm tunes different versions of the chip for different foldable designs — even making the chip itself thinner so it fits inside these super-slim bodies.

That's the kind of detail that changes how a phone actually feels in your hand.

Right. And it also raises a question — what happens to Samsung's own Exynos chips now?

Yeah, back in March, Samsung was saying it wanted Exynos in every Galaxy device someday.

True. Ben Wood says we shouldn't read this as Samsung giving up on Exynos. The vertical model — designing your own chip, software, and services — is still a big advantage, the way Apple does it.

So Exynos isn't dead, but for right now, Qualcomm's chips are just better for what Samsung wants to do — especially with AI.

Exactly. Amon said personal devices are becoming the link between users and AI agents, so on-device power and connectivity matter more than ever.

For Japanese listeners — Samsung is a real player here too, so this is worth watching.

It is. A more consistent Snapdragon experience across the whole Galaxy lineup should show up in Japan pretty quickly.

Now, let's turn to a design story from JR West.

Oh — the new-look Shinkansen? I saw the photos.

Right. JR West announced a new design for the Sanyo Shinkansen "Kodama" — the local-stop bullet train that runs between Shin-Osaka and Hakata.

And the color really jumped out. What's the theme?

It's called "Sanyo Blue" — inspired by the calm Seto Inland Sea. The design goes on the N700 series 6000-number cars, and it starts rolling out from December.

Sanyo Blue — I like that name. Where did the design come from?

This is a nice detail. JR West worked with a university on it — Kyoto Institute of Technology, or Kyoto Kogei Sen-i Daigaku in Japanese.

A university-designed Shinkansen. What did they focus on?

The main motif is a wave pattern based on the shimmer of the Seto Inland Sea surface. And they added small motifs from all six prefectures along the Sanyo line.

So the whole route gets represented on the train itself.

Exactly. The N700 series 6000-number cars were only introduced in September 2025 — until now they used the same white and blue Nozomi-style design.

So this is basically a full makeover.

Right. And JR West's president Shoji Kurasaka said something worth listening to. He said, quote, "There's real value in the leisurely journey of the local-stop trains. We want people to enjoy the scenery from the window — the towns, the industrial areas, the countryside — that only the Seto Inland region can offer."

That's a nice message. Kodama makes many more stops than Nozomi or Hikari, so the ride is slower.

Yes — and JR West is basically saying, "Slow is the point." They want the design to make Kodama feel like a trip worth taking, not just a way to get somewhere.

How is JR West trying to link the train to the region itself? (JR

The company wants trains to feel more connected to local communities. They're hoping this design makes people feel more attached to Kodama and to the Seto Inland area.

Kind of turning the train into a regional ambassador.

That's the idea. Instead of just moving passengers, the train shows off the coast it's traveling through.

Any other design changes we should know about?

The article mainly focuses on the exterior — the Sanyo Blue base color, the wave lines, and the six-prefecture motifs. Interior details will probably come later.

Well, I want to see it in person once December comes around.

Me too. A design that says, "Take your time and look out the window" — that's a nice thing for a bullet train to say.

For our third story, let's go to Osaka — Shinsekai, the neighborhood under Tsutenkaku Tower. (3

Oh, I love Shinsekai. The old signs, the kushikatsu shops — very Osaka.

Right. And on July 22nd, in the middle of extreme heat, the neighborhood held its "Gochamaze" summer festival.

"Gochamaze" — that's a great Japanese word. It means all mixed up together, right? Everything thrown in.

Exactly. And this festival really lives up to the name. Over 200 people took part.

Who were the participants?

According to Asahi Shimbun, you had men and women in traditional happi coats, women dressed in maid outfits, international students, and more — all together carrying the mikoshi, or portable shrine, and beating taiko drums through the streets.

Maid outfits and happi coats in the same parade — that's the "gochamaze" part right there.

Absolutely. Everyone was mixed in — locals, students from overseas, subculture fans — all pulling the shrine together in the heat.

How did the festival get to this point? It didn't always look like this, did it?

It didn't. The festival has been part of the local shrine tradition for decades. But over the years, the number of shopkeepers and neighborhood kids dropped, and the festival got smaller and smaller.

That's a story you hear all over Japan — traditional events shrinking because there aren't enough young people to carry them.

Right. And Shinsekai's answer was to open the doors. Instead of keeping it local-only, they reached out to outside groups — students, fan clubs, subculture communities — and invited them in.

So they turned "not enough people" into "let's ask more different people."

Exactly. And that's why the parade now looks the way it does — over 200 participants of every kind, all carrying the mikoshi and drumming through the streets on a really hot day.

Was the heat a problem?

It was an extreme heat day, which is a real concern. But they still went ahead — the streets of Shinsekai filled up with the parade.

What does this say about how Japanese communities are handling these changes?

It's a good example of a neighborhood that didn't just watch a tradition fade — they redesigned who gets to carry it.

I like that framing. It's the tradition staying alive by changing who's inside it.

Right. And Shinsekai still has all the classic pull — Tsutenkaku Tower, the retro streets, the kushikatsu shops. Adding a festival like this on top just adds more reasons to visit.

So the festival isn't just cultural — it's also part of what keeps the neighborhood lively.

Exactly. When a shrinking festival turns into a 200-person, mixed-crowd parade, that says something about what the neighborhood wants to be.

It really does. A nice example of tradition and community adapting together.
