Okay. So how was Seattle?
Marc: That is exactly what I asked him. He did not answer it.
He skipped how was Seattle. Nobody skips that one.
Marc: He put a notebook on the table, opened it to a page, and turned it around so I could read it.
Marc: My three rules. Numbered. And under each one, in different ink, something he had added while he was over there.
サラ: He graded you.
Marc: Ten days in my own country, and he came back with corrections for me.
Marc: He lands Sunday and he is at his desk Monday morning. And before he sits down, he goes desk to desk with a paper bag. Coffee from the Seattle airport.
He bought souvenirs for the entire office on the way to the gate.
Marc: For the entire floor. And when he handed me mine, he apologized for it. He said, sorry, it is only from the airport.
さゆり: だから "Sorry, it is only from the airport."
Marc: And here is the part I am not proud of. I got the same box as everyone else, and I noticed.
You wanted a different one.
Marc: I did. Five years of asking to stop being a special case, and then he does it, and I felt it.
So when did the notebook come out?
Marc: Thursday. Same izakaya, same seat, same twenty minutes of baseball before anything else happens.
Marc: Then the glass goes down, the notebook comes out, and he says, Marc-san, I want to talk about your advice.
That sentence has never been good news in the history of sentences.
Marc: And sitting there reading my own handwriting back in his notebook, I had a very unpleasant thought. I have not lived in America in five years.
You are out of touch with your own country, and you did not find out until a guy from Tokyo told you.
Marc: I am more out of touch than I was willing to admit. And two of the three rules were right. Being right turned out not to be the useful part.
Marc: Rule one. If you go quiet to think, an American will fill the silence. They are not interrupting you. Silence makes them nervous.
Every word of that is true.
Marc: His note underneath says, true, but I could not use it.
What does that mean, could not use it?
Marc: The gap before somebody filled it was about one second. The time he needed to build an English sentence was about four.
Marc: He stopped counting on day four. Up to that point he had fourteen finished sentences that he never said out loud.
I have been there. Not in English, obviously. In Japanese, in a meeting, about a year in.
The wait was longer. I got my four seconds. And four seconds is enough time to talk yourself out of saying anything.
Marc: And then he used a phrase I have never heard him use in five years. He said, I could not get a word in edgewise.
さゆり: "get a word in edgewise" は、日本語の「口を挟む」です。
So rule one was accurate and completely useless. What about rule two?
Marc: Rule two was, how are you is not a real question. Say good, ask it back, keep walking.
Which is the most useful thing you can tell somebody landing in America.
Marc: His note says, number two was wrong.
Wrong how? It is not wrong.
Marc: Day six. A woman on the Seattle team, same hallway, six mornings in a row. That morning she says how are you.
Marc: He does exactly what I told him. Good, how are you, keep walking. And about four steps behind him she says, actually, not great.
And she said it to his back.
Marc: He did not turn around. And the reason is what has been bothering me. He did not know if turning around was allowed.
Marc: The rule I gave him was right ninety percent of the time, and I handed it over as if it were right always.
Marc, that is not a rule problem. That is a native speaker problem. You cannot see the exceptions, because you have never had to survive on the rule.
Marc: He put it more politely. He said, I think I gave her the brush-off.
Marc: And he did not. He followed instructions. The person who brushed her off was me, six days earlier, from a bar in Tokyo.
Rule three was name a day.
Marc: If somebody says we should get lunch sometime, that is not a plan. If you actually want lunch, say Thursday.
Marc: Next to that one he wrote two words in Japanese. It worked.
Marc: Day eight, somebody says we should grab coffee sometime. And Kenji says, Thursday? And the guy says, yeah, Thursday works. And they went.
That is the entire trick, and it takes four words.
Marc: But here is what he told me next. He said he could only do it because it was written down.
サラ: Meaning what?
Marc: In Japanese, with a Japanese colleague, he would not have said Thursday. Too forward. But in Seattle he was following a line in a notebook, so it was not him.
So the notebook was doing the asking, not him.
Marc: I thought I was handing him information. He did not need information. He needed somebody to tell him it was allowed.
さゆり: 英語の "How about Thursday?"
And that is most people, in any language. Almost nobody is confused about what to do. They are waiting to be told it is fine.
Marc: He also wrote down that the other guy looked surprised. Not annoyed. Surprised.
Marc: So he made the first move in a country where nobody makes it either, and he thinks that is American. It is not. Almost nobody does it anywhere.
Marc: There was a fourth line on the page. That one was not mine.
サラ: He added a rule.
Marc: He wrote his own. Different ink again, and this one had a date next to it. Day three.
サラ: What did it say?
Marc: Your English is very good.
I know where this is going.
Marc: And underneath it, eleven marks. Eleven times in ten days. He counted.
Marc: And the first thing he said was, they were all kind. Every single one of them meant well, and I think he is right.
And there is a second half.
Marc: There is. He said, and it also means they can hear that I am not from there.
In New York, people say that to somebody who was born in Queens. Thirty years in the same neighborhood, and somebody at a counter tells them their English is really good.
英語の "Your English is really good."
So what happened after he said it?
Marc: He closed the notebook. And then he said, Marc-san. I have said this to you.
サラ: What did you say?
Marc: I said, many times.
サラ: Did he apologize?
Marc: No. And I have thought about that every day since. If he had said sorry, I would have had to tell him it was fine.
Marc: And it is fine. I did not want to have to say it out loud.
Marc: That is him, exactly. And it is the part that hit home. Not the corrections. The eleven marks and then nothing.
Do you want people here to stop saying it to you?
Marc: I do not. What I actually want is to stop noticing it. That is a completely different thing, and nobody can hand it to me.
So ten days in Seattle did what three years of you explaining could not.
Marc: Yes. And I am glad it happened. Those are two separate sentences and both of them are true.
What about Koshien? He said he would book it when he got back.
Marc: I did not ask him. He came back with corrections and a tally of eleven. It did not feel like the night to ask him for a favor.
Thursday.
Marc: I know what the rule is. I have not booked anything, and I am not going to dress it up.
Marc: Alright. "out of touch." — When you have stopped keeping up with something, and you do not find out until somebody shows you.
サラ: "I am so out of touch with the music my little brother listens to."
This next one is mine, because I lose at it constantly. "get a word in edgewise." 「get a word in edgewise」、口を挟む隙がない。)
Marc: "There were five of them talking at once and I could not get a word in edgewise."
Marc: "been there." — Two words. It means, I have had exactly that experience, and you do not need to explain it to me. (日本語訳: 「been there。」
サラ: "My train was cancelled twice this morning." "Been there." 「been there。」)
Marc: "brush someone off." — To not really listen to somebody, and move past them.
サラ: "I asked him about the schedule and he brushed me off."
Here is the one I would actually use this week. "make the first move." 「make the first move」、最初の一歩を踏み出す。)
Marc: "Neither of us called for a month. Somebody had to make the first move."
Marc: "mean well." — Somebody has good intentions, even if what they did was not helpful.
サラ: "She means well, but I did not want advice today."
Marc: And the last one. "hit home." — When something finally reaches you, in a way that is not comfortable. 「hit home」。
サラ: "I read the letter twice, and the second time it really hit home."
Which is most of language, honestly. Almost nobody is trying to hurt you. Something gets through anyway.
Marc: One thing about the rules, because I do not want anyone writing mine down. Two of them were right and they still were not enough. If you are going to hand somebody a rule, hand them the exception with it.
And if nobody hands you the exception, you find it yourself, and it takes about four years.
Marc: It took me four. He did it in ten days, and I am still deciding how I feel about that.
サラ: See you next time.
Marc: Thursday. Somebody name a day.
